I've got one at home with 2 1TB mirrored in it, never had a problem with it streams media to ps3. It was a little fiddly to set up to be honest but now it up and running its fine.

I got one for my daily belt and braces system state backups of our servers. Also backs up our Spiceworks and a few other PCs - very good I have to agree.

About to order the second hard drive for it now.....then I may order another one to backup the backup....

Do the netgear NAS units still use a weird disk format that isn't readable by anything but the NAS? Only cus if the NAS broke I would like to take out one of the mirrors and be able to read it!

the readynas is great

no problems at all.

 

we got one in a hurry to replace a terrastation that failed all the time.......biggest pile of c**P ever

as for the disc format i can not help as it has always worked without fail never had the need to take them out.

Yeah the reviews for one I looked at a while back said they were great but some people on forums had dead ones and just wanted the data back. With a nice format like ext3 or fat its possible but the NAS was using some weird proprietry disk format which means you have to buy another NAS of the same brand to get the data back.

From what i've read, the data can be retrieved via a ia64 system or a debian virtual machine floating around on the netgear readynas forums. As far as i know it uses either the ext2 or ext3 filesystem with a larger block size that cannot be read by x86/amd64 machines.

 

FYI: the free drive can only be claimed via an authorised netgear reseller like amazon or ebuyer
