Windows update problem

We have an ongoing problem with Windows updates not being deployed via our WSUS server. While my colleague works on this via a discussion on Microsoft Technet I decided to tackle the problem from the other direction by trying to get the machines up to date through Windows Update.

 

If I connect to Windows Update via IE, initially it will find lots of updates including Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847). If I install the Framework, on reboot I can't connect to Windows Update, error code 0X80072EE2. If I choose to install the other updates first I then get the same error message for when I try to install the Framework. How can I install these updates and still have Windows Update working afterwards?
