I have a Windows 2000 station which runs an application in a DOS window. The user swipes a card containing username and password a beep is heard confiming the swipe, but the data is not tranferred to the application. It as if the card was never swiped through the card reader. Help.

We could use some more information to help you here...

please tell us the program, and the spec of the system. Also, give us an idea of other things going on at the same time... we might find it easier to help you then :)

No error messages. Device Manager says all devices working normally. Further information:

The application is the Easytrace Cashless till. Three other tills work fine. It is not the card being swiped, as that is how the user logs on intially at the Windows 2000 logon box. System Spec: Windows 2000, Service Pack 4. CPU: Intel 1 GHz. 256 Mb Ram. No other applications running on this box, just the Easytrace application. Free disk space: 15.2 Gb (92% free) File system: FAT32, as for the other stations. Chkdsk and disk defrag already run without success. Can't think what else to let you know at the moment.

Does the Dos box actually have focus? I assume the card reader is just passing the data to the application as an input string?

Whenever I'm having problems with a proprietary app, I do the following:

Check application event log for errors related to the program.

Browse to the program's directory and look for any file with a .log extension. Open them and look for errors.

Check the manufacturer's website in the support section. If it's a common problem, they'll have it listed there.

back on topic... does the terminal have a keyboard or a keyboard accepting recepticle? If so, can you type into the app?

To reply to you Ric,

Yes I have, for the moment, attached a keyboard and mouse to the station. I cannot type into the application either via the keyboard or using the mouse via the on screen keyboard or by touching the screen using the on screen keyboard. Something has changed since my last posting though: An ordinary DOS (Command Prompt) will now accept the swipe. That is to say that it will read the coded password and hard return in the magnetic swipe from the card. The problem now lies purley with the application. Odd.

Also Im curious, do they have a minimum spec for using this dos app, if so what are they ?

Not sure about the minimun spec. Why are you asking: Are you thinking about buying it? If so DON'T DO IT!

OK this thread can now be closed as the issue has been resolved with the help of Easytrace. It was to do with the properties of the DOS box There were two boxes ticked when there should only have been one (Insert Mode)
