Hello, Our RM SmartCache 2 box has died, and is out of its service agreement. So we would like to setup our own version of one (WebCache/Proxy). Does anybody have any ideas of what the best (Hopefully FREE) alternative is.

Thank You

Hi,

ok cool so squid will replace both features of the rm smartcache 2.

Is there any help i can get with setting up squid as i have tried playing around with squid befor but couldnt get it to go through our ISP's Proxy and so had no connection to the net.

Well squid will enable you to run a proxy server to replace your dead RM box however do you also want to repcache websites from a web interface?

You might want to consider something like Smoothwall or IP-COP, those are dedicated Linux installers with Squid preconfigured along with a friendly HTML interface. There are a lot of add-ons available for both too.

We run ipcop one of latest versions and it is very good at what it does. having said that thinking of running latest version of dans guardian on linux box which has a few more functions. Anyone out there use dans guardian on ubuntu and had any problems?

kasonne: if you decide to go with ipcop we can send you the text files for the filtering of different catogories, just PM me ok.

@Ric_: That was our next port-of-call after evaluating Endian firewall. If you don't roll-your-own, it seems you can have some good features of one implementation but without others, and vice versa if you use another implementation. For example, the Copplus+ (Dansguardian on IPCop IIRC) is incompatible with Advproxy/URLFilter. It's striking the right balance that can be the hard part I think :p

Thanks for the Help we have gone with Smoothwall with a url filter Add-on. Works better than the SmartCache!

Thanks Again
