.NET 3.5 update... so slow!

Recommended Posts

Just doing some vital updates on our main file server and as part of it .NET 3.5 was in there. Looks a reasonable enough item to install so set it off at 3:30pm... 45 mins later the progress bar hasn't moved and no sign of life from the installer exe's running in the background. What are MS playing at making such a diabolically slow update, need this back online by 5pm

Thought it was me! I had the same thing the other day, update on server to install WSUS and it took ages, then suddenly it was finishing install. It gets there in the end. Can it be downloaded separately as I downloaded it via the Microsoft website and it still has to download it during install which is the slow bit.

Correction, it usually gets there in the end. I had the .NET 3.5 SP1 update trash a SBS server that I was unfortunate enough to have to work on. Took out lots of the integrated components and required a reinstall of the previous versions to get the server up and running again.

I have never had it bomb on a propper version of Windows Server though and making SBS fail is not exactly difficult but still be cautious if you are dealing with an SBS 2003 R2 box that has not had updates in a while because if it bites it causes a very big mess.

On the flip side this update provided a user detectable speed boost to slower Vista machines so it is not all bad :)

When you've got something like this and the progress bar isn't moving, bring up task manager, go into processes and then View | Select columns.

turn on I/O Bytes Read and I/O Bytes Written; you should now see that the process is reading/writing data and can be reasonably confident that something is happening.

Agreed that this is a very, very slow update - I'd guess it's replacing an awful lot of files!

Is it possible to download an offline network install from Microsoft or perhaps from logistix online?

Logistix: http://www.logistixonline.com/index.php?pid=filelibrary&cmd=viewcatclient&id=8

Microsoft : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en - go to the bottom of the page and look for the link that says:

Full Package

To download the full package, rather than the bootstrapper, click on the link below:

.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package)
