Hi all Smoothwall usuers,

Thanks the tireless work of Claire G, I have a SWG-708 appliance on my bench for evaluation (and hopefully purchasing if all goes well). Currently, it's given me a headache!

I've done what is described in the manual as a "basic" install.

Most of the installation is fine (everything complete and I can see it is filtering etc), but it is saying:

Warning - Your SmoothWall system is currently not registered. Connect to the Internet, at which point your SmoothWall system will automatically register itself. To connect to the Internet, configure the default gateway settings on the interfaces page.

As well as not "being registered" it is also not downloading the updates etc.

I've followed the manual perfectly and also reset the device twice to make sure!

Does anyone have any ideas?

(I have logged a call with the smoothwall tech support guys but they are busy and am still waiting for a call back - so thought I'd try this!)

its not that you have a proxy that you forward onto for HTTP/s traffic, i don't have one or used one but i know that stuff that can't use proxy's is a nightmare to set up here as we cannot register over https as it needs to be forwarded onto our leas proxy

Have a look at System | Preferences | Registration Options

I've also currently got a 708 on eval :)

At the risk of sounding ultra thick... what do I put in the server field there? The proxy server that the smoothwall box should use as its connection?

If you have to use an upstream proxy to access the internet then you should put its address and port details in there.

I was told that the registration system tries to connect at boot time, and then after a given interval, so it may be best to reboot after altering any settings here.

Sorry it has taken a while for someone to get back to you.

I would appreciate it if you would PM me the support ticket ID, then I can make sure someone gets in touch. Unfortunately I ahve been in and out a bit today and not monitoring edugeek as well as usual :)

Set the upstream proxy for "smoothie traffic" like registration & licencing here:

system » preferences » registration options

In "server" put your upstream proxy that SW should use to connect out.

and set your upstream proxy or proxies for your web traffic here:

system » upstream proxies » policy

Hi Tom,

I'll PM you my real details so hopefully you can marry me and the ticket up.

I spoke with Chris(?) who spent a chunk of time with me trying various things inlcuding changing some of the backend registration stuff. My box took ages (really ages!) to reset following the changes and I had to reboot my computer too. After that I was due to respond to the helpdesk ticket with an update - but I haven't received an email!

I'm happy to say I'm in, registered and updated now.

Either the changes that Chris got me to do, or the couple of clicks tweaking https settings I did ended up curing me.

I'm not officially back in the office until next Monday, so will have a good play and get as many staff on it as soon as possible.

Thanks for the update - I spoke to Chris also during the afternoon. I got a ticket ID - so you *should* have had an email, i'll look into wether we got bounced.

Glad it is sorted anyway :)
