What software/OS for media player laptop

Got a nice LCD TV with VGA input for Valentines and I fancy setting up an old 256MB laptop with a wireless card and running it on top of the DVD player as a media player.

 

Is there a nice free windows XP prog to do the job or do I install some Linux flavour.

 

Suggestions from those who've done this please

Try XBMC Live it runs from usb or cd by far the best media player, they do other versions too mac, windows,xbox.

Tried just using Windows Media Player on XP but machine just has 256MB RAM and is too slow for rest of family to use

 

I tried GeeXbox but that didn't enable/use the wireless card.

 

Will give XMBC a go.
