USB device not Recognised

Hi

I have a HP Proliant ML350 server that will no longer recognise any external USB hard drives. The error that pops up says “USB device not Recognised” and says one of the devices connected to the PC has malfunctioned. It has not, as the drive works ok on other PC’s and laptops.

 

This problem happens on all four USB ports, but the ports are ok with our USB printer. Sounds like some sort of corruption within Server 2003. I have “googled” the problem and tried a couple of fixed with no luck. This fault happens on any storage device attached i.e. pen drives, external HDD, card reader etc. See screen shot.

 

I have updated all the drivers on the server with no luck. Any quick fixes ?? Looking at the response from google - I don't think so.

Something wrong with the USB motherboard driver maybe?

 

How about a Anti Virius scan to

Safe Mode Cleanup of the Device Manager

 

Also ensure that in the bios everything usb related is enabled ie usb keyboard / mouse etc

Start Regedit

Navigate to,

 

HKLM\System\Mounted Devices

 

You will see a list of entries similar to: \??\Volume{726e301b-532f-11dd-937d-000000000000}

Delete them all.

 

Keep the \DosDevices\C: etc

 

Either reboot or Disable and Re-enable the USB Root Hub in the device manager.

 

Next time you plug in a disk it should re-enumerate itself and come on line.

 

If that fails then there is a chance your USB has been toasted, these things do have a limit on the amount of current they can provide to powered devices.

Hi all, and many thanks to al who have set a reply.

 

Finally traced the fault to the HP USB printer plugged into the USB port on the back of the server. Once this was removed the USB hard disk burst into life and all was ok. I then plugged back the printer and the drive continued to work. BUT, if the drive was unplugged then any external storage device plugged in we got the same error.

 

Goes to show what problems other USB devices can cause. Lets hope USB3 fixes some of these faults.

Just goes to prove the OSI Model is a good way to fix problems as well - checking the physical / hardware layer first and process of elimination by obviously removing all usb devices first
