cookie_monster Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 We're just rolling out IE8 and i've noticed that the 'Favorites Bar' appears by default can this be turned off using group policy I can't see an option? The inetres.adm file in C:\WINDOWS\inf (on the DC) shows as 08 March 2009 which seems a little old but it does have IE8 entries in it. Is there a newer version than this? Thanks.

Michael Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 You do appear to be using the right version of inetres.adm. It's an IE8 only feature for the moment (until IE9 arrives), so you can easily tell.
cookie_monster Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 Ok I still can't see it, there's lots of 'Turn Off' settings including 'Quick Tabs' but I can't see any IE8 specific settings. Can you tell me what settings you see above and below it just so I can make sure my eyes aren't deceiving me If I right click Admin Templates in the policy it shows inetres 2706KB 08/03/2009.

User Configuration - Admin Templates - Windows Components / Internet Explorer - Turn off Favourites Bar Set to ENABLED I could do with this setting now and I don't have any downtime for my DC's scheduled at present. I'm sure that an updated .adm will solve the problem that's exactly what I did with IE7. Thanks.

cookie_monster Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 Right...of course it looks like Server 2008 is pulling in the .admx file from C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions rather than C:\Windows\inf. Forgot about that. @ Gibbo, when we moved to IE7 on our 2003 servers ArcServe stopped working and they needed to put out a patch and I think e-science as well. It can cause problems if not tested and I haven't tested it yet

It broke WSUS on the first (and therefore only) server I installed it on On the workstations it was even worse - it caused every workstation to crash when staff logged on, giving error messages about Winlogon and then rebooting. As soon as I removed it (from every machine...gaaaaah!) the problems stopped. Must be something to do with either profiles or GPOs though as the same never happened when pupils logged on (pupils all share the same mandatory profile and have different GP restrictions to staff). No problem with admins logons either.

It does now strangly whenever I open the GPMC all the entries appear out of order and I have to sort them. I'm so used to the order they apear in I usually forget to sort them Anyway all working now cheers, just need to remember to look in Policydefinitions in future.
