Really strange problem with 1 PC slow logon

Hi Chaps,

 

I have a really strange problem occuring on one PC, it takes ages to logon whichever user you try and once logged on network access is slow and unreliable. One thing that really slows it up and ends up crashing every time is adding a printer from active directory.

 

I have tried a known good working ethernet port/cable and even swapped the hard disk out to a known working identical PC with the same results. I have run several tools to test the hard disk, all come out perfect.

 

So hardware is definanlty fine.

 

I have also tried removing this computer from the domain flushing dns and rejoining under the same computer name and the same process joining under a different computer name. The computer is in the same group as all the others.

 

All other PC's on the domain are fine and logon within about 8-9 seconds where as this one takes either 30-40 seconds or over 4 minutes.

 

I'm quite stumped now, need some fresh eyes on the problem!

What tasks are active? The reason I ask is that I've seen rtvscan (part of Symantec scan) go mad and consume masses of resources at logon. It's happened on a couple of machines here and has been fixed by uninstalling and re-installing the client software.

I've seen this before and it was a rogue network card. I always have a couple of spare 3com 10/100's lying around for testing purposes now.

Sounds like it could be a network adapter / mother board problem to me.

 

Does the HDD work fine in another machine? that would eliminate software from the equation.

I would just fit a new NIC with latest drivers or at least try and udpate the drivers and try again.

 

if its onboard then update bios and update NIC drivers and try again, if that does not help then disable onboard nic and use a PCI nic again with latest drivers from relevant said manufacturers website

Network card is not the problem as I've swapped the disk in to know working identical PC.

 

Later today I cloned a known good working hard disk on to this one and the problem persists, so it seems that this computer account is not working and any new ones added to the domain are not working correctly, any ideas, I'm stumped...

Right! After looking at it today after giving it a break I noticed straight away that an IPCONFIG shows that is connecting to the wrong server! It's connecting to the curriculum one instead of the Admin one!

 

Why would this happen? It's logging in to the correct server/domain at login...
