Options for LA schools moving away from SIMS? Questions...
Japtastic replied to Japtastic's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks -
I work for two LA schools that are federated and both use SIMS/FMS. The question came up in a meeting about the possibility of moving away from SIMS. For anyone that has gone through this process for LA schools could you answer some questions? Also what MIS system you moved to and how it was received? • Is there any info about the data transfer from SIMS we need to be aware of? Does anything get missed etc? • How do CTF’s IN AND OUT work + Census etc? Does this cause issues for the LA or School if not using SIMS? • I don’t know how much integration there is with SIMS and FMS at the moment because I don’t use the systems but is there anything to be aware of that being separate if we moved away from SIMS? • Anything else you can think of that we need to be aware of? Thanks

Smart Notebook and RDS graphics issue
Japtastic replied to Japtastic's topic in Educational Software
Can't seem to find that and no way to do it in Hyper-V Yes, heard that before. Just annoying that it worked for years and then stopped, while it works everywhere else we have it deployed. Yes, tried various settings with no change Will look into that but don't think we have it enabled anyway... -
Hi all, Got a strange issue on one RDS server for the last 6 months or so. The majority of SNB files (that work perfectly well on every other device) don't work when using a remote desktop session, the words get scrambled up. This RDS server is a Hyper V. The Host server and RDS server are all up to from Windows Update and drivers from Dell including the host graphics drivers being changed a few times. Also tried adjusting the remote desktop client options in regards to graphics and quality, again with no joy. Smart Notebook has also been uninstalled and reinstalled with different versions tried. It does work fine if I remote in via LogMeIn to the RDS server and open an SNB file. It also works if I use the Hyper-V virtual machine connection. Any ideas?

Hi Guys, Has any one got a working script for creating these. I've tried a couple but they don't seem to work for one reason or another. We are whitelisted so that won't be an issue. It's just too much to create 400 ID's. I need to get a script working one way or another! Cheers

Hi, I'm getting confused here! Can anyone answer some questions for me? We have just got 30 iPad's with a charge and sync trolley. It has 2x USB's to connect to all 30. I understand that I can use Apple Configurator to manage the iPad's and deploy apps which I have successfully done today. I have used a normal Apple ID to download the IPA's through the iTunes store. I have also signed up to and got working, Meraki, with our school VPP account. This is where I am getting confused. If I use Apple Confirgurator then I can sync all the apps I want and they sync to the devices without any user interaction or being asked to sign in to an iTunes account which is exactly what we want. If I use Meraki (which would be handy for remotely installations when I'm not there and the benefits of VPP, if there are any?) then I can use the VPP account but it appears that every device needs its own Apple ID to accept new apps. Am I missing something or is this about right? Cheers

I know it's old but this really helped me out today. I had to set the current primary DC to burflag D4 and the new one to D2.

No profile options set but profile being created/recreated
Japtastic replied to Japtastic's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Any one? -
Hi Chaps, Most of our staff use roaming profiles. This is set within Active Directory under user properties then the profile tab. We then have a path set on the server for the profile folder. This works well. Some staff do not need or want a roaming profile and to be honest I'm swaying towards this my self for the rest of the staff at some point in the future. The problem comes when I remove the profile path from user properties/profile tab. Even if I delete the folder from our share on the server and the local one from the PC, the profile gets recreated. I can't figure it out, where could it pulling these settings from? Maybe I'm just having a mind block, need some pointers please

Authenticating users automatically

All resolved. Added it to the Curriculum server again and had the same strange issues when I last tried it but updated drivers sorted it. Thanks for your help chaps. -
Authenticating users automatically
Japtastic replied to Japtastic's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Thanks, I did try that a while ago but there was some issue which I can't remember. Will try that method again and let you know the error. -
Hi Chaps, Having a bit of a brain block with this! I've got a shared printer on our ADMIN server that the teachers on the curriculum network connect to. Problem is that it will, on a very regular basis tell them that access is denied. The only way to resolve this is to browse to the admin server and input a admin server user name and password then it all springs in to life. I have tried adding the details to Stored Usernames and Password in control panel which appears to work more or less for users that always use the same PC but for roaming users this doesn't stick. I've looked into trusted domains but apprently this can't be done between Server 2003 standard and SBS 2008. Any chance of a little help please?

Hi Chaps, This may be a stupid question and it's late but can I setup an admin password? Also how do I setup the email on closing as at the moment it's not happening... Server 2003 Cheers

Another thing that has been noticed today is that when a user deletes an item from XP Outlook 2003 then goes on to a W7 Outlook 2003 machine it doesn't seem to be in sync, for instance deleted items from the XP profile still show up on the W7 machine??? More serious now due to this new problem, any clues any one at all?

Hi, I have just installed our first windows 7 laptop that is shred between a few different users who already have a working login/profile on other computers and for the most part have got any little bugs sorted out my self but there is one that remains a problem. When a user logs on to this new laptop it doesn't seem to remember the path to my documents which is stored on the server and doesn't remember their Outlook 2003 details, once they have input this once it's fine but there are about 10 different people using this laptop and I don't want to have to do them all manually and they are not technical enough to do it themselves. Is this something to do with the user profiles being different in XP and W7 with .v2 extension, may be there is no way around it and it has to be done once manually? Any clues? Server 2003 btw

Maybe a silly question but how is installing a gigabit 1000mbps switch when all the PC's only have 10/100 network cards going to benefit? Throughput?
-
Thanks for the info chaps and sorry for the late reply, had a long chat with Net-Ctrl who are supplying us with a Zonedirector 1000 and 3 x G Access Points. I do need some more info on a gigabit switch, willl this replace one/all of the existing switches? Again any recommendations?

Ok I've been having a think and wonder what you think of this plan. Upgrade laptop wireless cards to Ndraft Use 3x N Draft Access points in a central location Lock 20 laptops per AP with MAC address's Here is the side view of the building and my proposed plan, excuse the bad PSP ; What do you think, viable, workable?
-
Ok well that's a great start, any suggestion or recommendation of AP and how many laptops per AP?

Hi Chaps, As the case with most schools equipment has been purchased throughout the years and it's all now a bit of a mess. There is about 35 cat5 PC's cabled to the network area (pictures) and 60 wireless laptops running from a draytek vigor. We are getting some slowness and the 60 extra laptops that try and connect wirelessly through the draytek vigor struggle and it means starting up 10 at a time as all at one go causes most to not connect. I assume the current equipment is not up to it. I've uploaded these pics to show you what we have, I don't have much experience with network infrastructure so need some help, there maybe something very obviously wrong. The school have got some money and would like to modernise sort out the slowness and laptop issue. I can supply any more info you need and I'm sure you'll need lots but I thought I'd start with some pics and a basic out line of what we have. Any comments on the current hardware or recommendation of a company to sort this out? Thanks. network cabinet.zip network cabinet1.zip

Really strange problem with 1 PC slow logon
Japtastic replied to Japtastic's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Right! After looking at it today after giving it a break I noticed straight away that an IPCONFIG shows that is connecting to the wrong server! It's connecting to the curriculum one instead of the Admin one! Why would this happen? It's logging in to the correct server/domain at login...
