Going round the twist

Now I can normally get through a book in about a week - even large ones - [ not manuals ] - but at the moment it's taking me bloody ages to get through Dawkin's 'The God Delusion' - I'm 3 weeks in and not even half way through. Has anyone else read this and if so, how long did it take you ?

It's quite interesting in places I have to say and certainly makes me think but at times I do struggle with the contents......[ must be getting old ]

I've found it pretty easy reading. He's a good writer.

 

Shame about the content - reading Dawkins on theology is like reading Ray Comfort on science (he has no clue).

I found it pretty interesting. He makes some good points. As to whether he's out of his depth on theology, I tend to agree with his view that it's a non-subject, so his application of scientific rigour is just as valid as religous dogma.

 

Incidentally, if you want to get a balanced view, or just want a laugh or sneer, you could follow it up with "The Dawkins Delusion", in which every point of logic or science is expertly refuted through the medium of, errmmm, blind dogma. Still, it's a mercifully short book.

Thanks for the tip - certainly one to put on my wish list from amazon. I've just ordered another 5 books on various stuff so it will wait till I've gone through that lot.

Well at least you read it with an open mind [ by what I can gather from your short posting, correct me if I'm wrong please ] - which is what I am doing. It's no good reading stuff like this with an already sided view [ for or against ] as that was serve no purpose at all - [ for the reader ]

Some of his very dry wit is quite a relief in parts, but needed !!

It was obvious to me that something was slowing me down with it ... either I was getting too wrapped up in some points or my mind was elsewhere. I would rather come back to it when I was more open to it too. It is on my list for summer reading now but I think I'll re-read The Selfish Gene first.

Arrrr, well I'm glad it's not just me then !! I'll give it another week until my next job lot of books turn up then shall put it to one side ready to pick up at a later date.
