Diello Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Anyone have a recommendation for an external hard drive with eSATA that'll work on Windows 7 x64 please? Was looking at the Iomega Professional series, but they have issues with x64 drivers apparently. Looking for a 1TB ideally. Cheers
Ric_ Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Surely the only driver issues that you should suffer would be from your SATA controller since eSATA is just a plain old SATA port on the outside of your case (with a slightly different shape connector). You could always just buy an el cheapo enclosure and whack a big disk in it. You can get cheap and cheerful with Sumvision stuff but if there's going to be lots of plugging/unplugging involved, a bit of extra build quality is always worth the extra. 1
runcmd Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 My backup solution for my home pc is a tray device which sits in a 5.25 drive bay and connects to an internal sata data port and sata power. The advantage to this is that you can just slide a sata hard drive in, back up your data & remove the hard drive when finished. With this method there is no faffing around with usb, sata & power cables each time you want to back up. Also there is no extra stuff sitting on my desk and no screwing hard drives in and out of traditional enclosures so backups to multiple hard drives is cheap and easy. 5.25in Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack for 3.5in Hard Drive - StarTech.com 1
synaesthesia Posted January 28, 2010 Posted January 28, 2010 Got a similar device sitting on my desk, hot-swap esata dock that does all size drives. Quite usefyl and doesn't take up the limited room in my case Mine is Sumvision (cheap n cheerful) but you can get better branded and quality units. 1

(they're fairly well known and reputable - lol) Antec Easy Sata 5.25" Internal Hot Swap Hard Drive Caddy - Ebuyer Also, if you wanted to check an alternative root, there's the desk version hot swap for both 3.5 and 2.5 drives - USB 2.0 though. (I got one of these - very handy) Extra Value Hard Drive Docking Station With USB Connection for 2.5" & 3.5" SATA Hard Drives - Ebuyer Chunks 1

Was contemplating doing something like this so I could use it for time machine with 2 * 2tb hdd's
