Mentioned this in my office earlier, and one teacher said 'but handouts are needed for SEN kids! What about dyslexic kids?' My response of 'we don't have 605 SEN kids in this school, they are a minority was met with 'you'd be surprised with how many we have!'.

 

So, how do you overcome that kind of resistance? Where facts are ignored in favour of 'THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!' like reactions?

 

Our teachers rely heavily on work booklets, and worksheets which are cut down to fit into exercise books. I've never understood this. Why not project the work onto the board, and then get them to write it down and answer it in their books?

I didn't, I read them just now during my working hours :-)

 

What do you think of the one suggesting we stop buying computers and have the kids use their own instead? My initial reaction is that it wouldn't fly, especially in the less affluent areas (all the millions of people too rich for Home Access grants etc but too poor to actually buy the equipment themselves). I can also see personal safety implications if it became known that our students all had laptops/netbooks/iPhones/whatever in their bags, plus the competition to have the nicest/best/pinkest laptop.

 

It is an interesting idea though, albeit not with such high-priced items as laptops; I could see it working with things like digital cameras and MP3 players.

I must be psychic posting my question about printing this morning.

 

In comparison to other schools printing is relatively under control in my school it would seem. I'm astounded by the figures some schools were reporting earlier.
