Ok ... some folk have taken offence at me calling them a troll. Others who have read the thread have taken offence too.

Fine ... but please remember the context of how I have put it. The same way that you get folk outside of geek circles will say 'geek' with a sneer but we do it with a sense of ownership and pride, try taking troll in the same manner. There are two types of troll. The ones I mentioned further up are those I respect but acknowledge that they will do things that might wind others up. Trolling is not always a bad thing as long as others can spot it, as long as you know that there are people that will disagree with you and as long as you know you are responsible for your actions. The people i mentioned all do so with aplomb.

The other trolls ... they are easy to spot. They are malicious, they do so without thinking of consequences, they take no part of blame on themselves and they revel in the distress in others ... the people I mention don't fit that criteria. Even RingOfFlame is pretty ok.

Others have understood what I meant ...

There is another side to this though ... there is a method of management that you use where you give your superiors limited options, or you ask them leading questions, all to push them in a particular direction. This is what trolls will do too. Some trolls will even be adept at the Socratic method ... it can be complex and bizarre how it all works. So ... trolls ... you can't live with them, you can't live without them. Hey ... why else do we have a troll smilie? Surely it is to state that we are making a provocative statement or point. If we are going to get rid of anything remotely trollish then we might as well get rid of that smilie!

There's more to life than arguing with 'avatars' and being labeled as someone who can only give an unqualified opinion.

Admins, if you can, please kill my account.

:getmecoat:

Okay your old enough to make decisions for yourself, bye....

Me I see these things as an almost monthly thing now... I think the last 'season' was in December, for about a week.

Will try with all my might not to feed the :troll:'s, and because of that it doesn't really bother me...

@ringofflame - to be honest ... bored now. Yep, definitely a :troll: but c'mon ... it's not all about you and the fight against the man!

Acknowledge what thou art, A wretch, a worm, a nothing. Sounds better than Jerk.. well you know.

@localzuk Yes my rep may well be in the red at the moment, but what you don't realize is that for all the bad reputation I have received I have also received both positive reputation and PMs. So although my post maybe construed as troll like some do have merit which other can see. I will put my hands up and say that posting the photo wasn't the best thing to do and wont do such a thing again in the future.

This is going to be short and to the point. Who cares? What difference has this made to your exsistence? If you don't like something but it isn't harmful ignore it, don't try and snuff it out because "you" don't like it.

Let me ask one more question. Obviously I don't know who cares. But the people who do will know who they are and I've no doubt even though they don't like this thread or the ones that preceded it will still be making sure they read it. And it is to you I ask a question! I don't want a response I just want you to think about it. Why does it upset you so much?

On another note what on earth am I doing on here Saturday night. I'm going to have a drink ;)...

@Richard_S hey mate, I was sorry to see you go the first time, glad you came back and would be sorry to see you go again ... but hey, you are a :troll: Push buttons and people react. Don't get surprised or upset. Don't be surprised or upset when others press buttons and get a rap on the knuckles.

(hmm ... I can hear the crackle of burning leather as you get hot under the collar of the leather waistcoat ... talking of which, I thought you were going to pop down to BETT sometime so we could have a beer ... or rather a beer and a coke? I miss you wandering onto the capita stand in your t-shirt and leather waistcoat, looking for someone to hassle ;) )

You know that diplomacy isn't my strong point and I know I will get my knuckles rapped from time to time but I don't like it when someone asks for a view on a subject and I give one that is not politically or socially acceptable and I am "jumped on" for posting it even if it is a valid comment.

Yes I will provoke debate and I won't pull punches if I believe in something BUT I always respect other people and their views as long as they respect me and mine.

I wanted to come to BETT this year but due to work commitments I couldn't :( but I am going to try for next years.

Python fixes everything.

And, after having read through all of the cause and effect of this so called issue, I'd like to remind everyone of another valuable and famous Python lesson.

So, let's sing a little song.

Always look on the bright side of life!

Chins up, folks - large forums all have a varied amount of users with varying levels of intellect, common sense, different styles of putting across a point, some don't have a point to make other than to annoy, some just want attention. It's how the world works too, and just like IRL everyone has the ability to pop over to their UserCP and look up the "Ignore User" function. I've modded (and still do) some of the largest gaming communities in Europe, and still help run the largest IRC network in the world. One thing I've learned is that whatever you do and however much you try and maintain a status quo, people are always going to be different. So, instead of trying to force everyone to get along, you work on the common areas of interest and strengthen that. And if that's not possible, use the Ignore function :D

So, what's the common area of interest? Educational IT. So when it boils down to it, let's remember the reason we're here in the first place.

(slight edit: don't take this as an advert or anything, just trying to show that there's plenty of other thriving communities that can manage with all these different types of people and perhaps a leaf can be taken from their books)

Wonder what Dos_Box will have to say tomorrow about all this?

Capita didn't like him taking them to task on the quality of their product ... but that was the same year when another supplier had been giving out the "We hate SIMS" t-shirts.

Then again ... the same year a number of people were escorted off the RM stand for being rather demanding too ... and after dredging through my usenet archive I spotted Richard's post about BETT 2004.

Have to agree with you there. I lost count of the number of people who

wandered off in mid conversation when they found out that I am not a teacher

let alone a deputy or head.

On a a lighter note it was nice to see that I am still "black listed" by

RM!!!

BETT Show - uk.education.schools-it | Google Groups

I don't think Richard even made it onto the stand! It was the same year I was shuffled off Microsoft stand I think ... because I was asking when they were going to make a change to the integration model to allow Macs and *nix machines to access shares a lot easier. (It had been a frustrating year trying to make Services for Unix work!) I think that was the last seriously techie year at BETT ... ever since it seems to have been a reasonable mix and techies are more accepted now. People are willing to speak and answer questions ... or they have all been on customer services courses.

@richard_s yep ... sure as hell Capita don't respect you saying your opinion when you go onto their stand ;-)

Do you reckon you might get to the conference this year?

I did query the quality of the code in SIMS as we had a lot of problems due to poor execution of code but that was just one of those things. The was asked to leave the RM stand 6 out of the 7 years that I went to BETT beause of my commenst on there products, sales procedures and due to the fact that I was directing people to have look at the Viglen stand :) much to the amusement of the Viglen staff who used to run abook on how long it would take me to get kicked off the RM stand.

Wow, it's like waking up after a particularly good party at about 11am and going 'I drunk how much?', 'Oh, I was sick, I thought so but wasn't sure' and 'Where are my shoes\wallet\car keys?' or even 'What's that smell? Oh please God don't let it be me!'

It seems we've had a bit of a party here. I had made a comment that I should possibly have sent via pm, but given my workload and the amount of 'Reported post' emails rapidly filling my inbox, I felt I had to say something. This was the net party equivelent of a 6 pack of Carlsberg Export. Next Tony tried to add a bit a levity and common sense to the situation, but the net party bottle of Thunderbird had not made his situation clear. There were also many comments and posts by members who had brought Kestral lager but had just spent the past hour in the net kitchen drinking the really good stuff the others had brought.

And now look at the place! I hope someone is going to help me clear up! Ah well, at least I have some telephone numbers to ring tomorrow to either tell people off, or thank them.

I had to laugh.

Hi Joe, It's Chris calling from EduGeek regarding your childs behaviour...

:D

you DIRECTED people to the Viglen stand?

Were you drunk? Otherwise intoxicated? Or just fancied a laugh? :D

Probably easy to achieve given the fact that they're usually only a stones throw away.
