1 external usb hdd

1 set of bootable os x discs

Boot up with the OS X discs and see if you can use disk utility to make an image of the main mac hdd and back it up to the ext hdd ??

That or one of the below

Deploy Studio

Carbon Copy Cloner

Is it just one macbook or multiples of?

If you have a fair few to do it may be worth looking in to investing in a Mac mini and a copy of OS X Server. 10.6 is a pretty good buy. Then what you invest in is a platform which can leverage Net-Booting. Couple this with Deploy Studio (which in itself is relatively easy to set up and configure) gives you a scalable method for capturing images and deploying them.

This is the method I would recommend personally.
