Password a Printer

Hi all

 

Does anyone know of an app like this one Printer Password on your Windows PCs - Download Now but free?

 

I want to be able to control the printing from specific work stations but it be instantly unlockable by a certain group of people and this not be based on a users logon.

Most photocopiers can be programmed so users are required to enter a User ID, usually a 4 digit code to print. You can then keep track of how much everyone is printing. Not sure how good a 100% software solution would be.

Its not for tracking costs and i dont want to limit staff at all no prompts at any point, its too stop the children printing unless the teacher has specifically said they can (at which point they will put the password in).

we do have pins for the xerox copiers.

I hope you have more success than we did. We print mainly to photocopiers and some of the teachers told the kids what the codes are!

How about a slightly different way to go about this - using a print release system?

 

This way, kids click print, the job then gets put on hold until a person who is logged in and allowed to use a release station clicks release? There are various pay-for options for this (We have Papercut at our school, but don't use the release station). I have also found CZ Print Release Station - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com which seems to be a free package which does it.
