farquea Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 A user has just pointed out to me that her daughter couldnt email her. After a little bit of investigating it seems if you try and email someone in the school from a hotmail address you recieve the following bounce back email; This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification. Delivery to the following recipients failed. It attaches a random file which i have no idea what it is, if i open it with notepad its just gobbledegook so theres nothing really that is very useful to determine why they aren't being delivered. The user says her daughters email her from hotmail addresses regualrly and have always worked until today. Any ideas on where to start at getting to the bottom of it?
solitaire89 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Is there anything generated by your mail server? If we ever get mails failing to reach us because of an issue on our side, I always get a report (normally in triplicate) on the server that gives me more info than found in the automated reply to the sender.
farquea Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 problem is a lot of our mail stuff is govered by the college which is on the same land site as our school but nothing really to do with us (stupid setup i know), and getting hold of them is usually quite a task in itself. But they do have some kind of bounceback messages because ive been trying to get hold of them about IRIS alert emails that dont get through i know if something is rejecyed as SPAM by our (their) servers it sends a message saying it was recjected as spam. This message im getting back to my hotmail account is coming from Hotmail mail servers not the school/colleges.
solitaire89 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 (edited) hmm... i take it they can't mail other places then off hotmail? Edited January 12, 2010 by solitaire89
Marci Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Sounds like a screw up with your MX records in DNS at ISP level (wherever manages the DNS for your public domain) This message im getting back to my hotmail account is coming from Hotmail mail servers not the school/colleges. Post the message, including the gobbledygook.
Michael Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Does it work with Yahoo Mail and Gmail? If it does then it could well be the domain @hotmail.com has been filtered completely.
solitaire89 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Does it work with Yahoo Mail and Gmail? If it does then it could well be the domain @hotmail.com has been filtered completely. Would that not still cause logs to be generated on the mail server? Purely a question, and nothing meant by it - I'm trying to learn as I'm going, and I'm blonde so it's a long process Sounds like a screw up with your MX records in DNS at ISP level (wherever manages the DNS for your public domain) Would that stop e-mail coming through from other sources too? Again, like I said... only a question, I'm learning
farquea Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 i can email fine from my gmail account. I just opened up the file that is attached in wordpad and its actually proper text; Reporting-MTA: dns;bay0-omc1-s18.bay0.hotmail.com Received-From-MTA: dns;BAY121-W45 Arrival-Date: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 04:59:34 -0800 Final-Recipient: rfc822; Action: failed Status: 5.5.0 Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 Rule imposed as is blacklisted on SpamCop (see SpamCop.net - Beware of cheap imitations) ive obviously edited the email addresses here myself. So this looks like my ISP, which would be the council, has blacklisted hotmail accounts? interestingly the ones so far which didnt work were hotmail.com my friend has just tried on a hotmail.co.uk address and that came through fine.
farquea Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 just tested it again and now it seems to work fine so i can only assume the county council have been buggering about their end and that was the problem!
mwnci Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Interesting... We use Live@edu - Microsoft hosted email - and have noticed that a lot of our email has bounced as a result of MS servers being blacklisted by Spamcop today. Has anyone else had this?
theriver Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I exchange two or three mails a day with a friend on Hotmail - she phoned me today complaining that her mails to me were bouncing this morning. Our mail server was fine though, and it cleared itself up by lunchtime.
mossj Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 (edited) Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 Rule imposed as is blacklisted on SpamCop (see SpamCop.net - Beware of cheap imitations) Would seem to be the key? Proberly something installed by the college or LEA on your email server? Edited January 12, 2010 by mossj
theriver Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I've actually bothered to check the logs now :-) This morning our mail system logged exceptions for three different servers, 65.54.190.3x (all registered to hotmail.com), citing the SpamCop blacklist. My friend has a hotmail.co.uk address, not .com, by the way. I've just checked, and one of these three is still on the SpamCop blacklist, so it's not all fixed yet . . . .
