What tool could I use to monitor the network traffic on an XP machine? I don’t need anything fancy just something that will tell me how much data has passed through the network card.

Thanks.

How much data, or what the data was?

How much data can be done centrally with an SNMP tool such as The Dude, but more info can be got from the wonderful Ethereal (Ethereal: A Network Protocol Analyzer).

I just need something simple like a tool that can be installed on the machine in question and tell me how much data is being passed through the network card. I could use the XP network status window but that only tells me the packets transmitted and not the MB's

Had a look but can't see anythiong really, would netrlimiter free help me in this case? or is there something beter I could use?

There are 3 ways you can do this for free:

1 - Use the builtin windows performance monitor to record the data that you need, beware this tool should only really be used for short periods of time as it can place a load on the PC AND fill up disk space quickly depending on the amount of data gathered. ( windows performance monitor network - Google Search )

2 - Use the free version of PRTG and setup a counter to monitoer the network usage of that PC, this will help if you are needing tomonitor the PC over an extended period of time. ( PRTG is a network performance monitor for Windows )

3 - As per plexers post also :)

all options will take time to setup but should weild the results you need.

Just had a quick look at netlimiter and I can look at the total download/upload of any process and see when its doing it hour by hour, so that should be enough to help me track any problems thanks.

aye its pretty decent. I posted that from my phone so couldnt include a link or much more info. It will be good for measuring your downloads at home as well so long as its the only computer using the internet. (or you could install it on all of them and add it all up at the end of the month?)
