Does anyone know of a good product that makes it easy to manage a unix server as an active directory file server? To manage groups and permissions etc....

Thanks,

Ben

Likewise CIFS file server:

Likewise Open: CIFS File Server and Identity Service

Note that you seem to need the latest beta version of the source code to compile yourself, you can't just "apt-get likewise" on Ubuntu (which works great for just having an Ubuntu machine join a domain, by the way).

No, scratch that - the self-installing .sh script that contains the .deb file for Likewise 5.3 (latest stable release) is just fine. Installation is simply a case of running the .sh file. The documentation / installation instructions are a bit our of date on Likewise's site - 5.3 seems to act just fine as a CIFS server.
