Remote Desktop Issue

Hi,

 

I've got an issue and it's got me and a friend baffled.

 

I work in a school as a full time ict technician but do some work at another school part time aswell. The server in the other school as remote desktop all set up and works perfectly from hom. However when i'm at work (my regular post) I cannot log in at all. I can log into any other RD but just not the place that I really need.

 

The error I get says:

 

"This computer cannot connect to the remote computer.

 

Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."

 

Thing is it work perfectly anywhere but when i'm at work. I did wonder if it was because we are connected to the same proxy server but really not sure.

 

Any ideas?

who control the internet access at the site where you can't get access. Sounds like a firewall issue.

Its all EMBC. We use them here and where i need to connect to. I cant see it being a firewall issue because I can get in from home (as do all the staff). I can also connect to any other RD just not this one from here!

It could be the firewall not allowing the RDP connection to go outside the network rather than it being the other site? If its ISA you may need to create a rule. just a thought

Are you sure port 3389 is open outbound?

 

you should not have to setup a forwarder for RDP as it should root via your external dns and go to the server

I've made sure and opened that port in the firewall and still the same. I might just leave the pc on at home and log in to that first then back to the school.

 

It's just really frustrating cos it works in every other circumstance!

It really depends how your LA has things setup. For example, I cannot VPN from school A into school B, but I can VPN into either from home for example.

when we set this up for our schools we need to allow an access list between the schools, which is banned by default to avoid complications

It could well be, we have the same here where they stop the schools talking to each other on the local network just incase something breaks out it does not affect every school in the borough.

if you don't ask you don't get. We certainly allow this in for tech staff in any of our schools but require the schools to agree and only allow access to specific devices from specific devices

Email Synetrix at [email protected] and ask them to send you a firewall change request form.

Could also be a DNS issue if it is getting the external public IP address for the server, rather than the IP address internal to EMBC
