Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Right, its not often I get bossy on EduGeek as I am quite happy lurking in the shadows puling strings, but I have a commandment that I want to be carried out. On the 2nd Dec I want all of us 'Geekers' to gather together in regional gatherings and drink beer and eat heatily in a Christmas type of get together. I am going to organise the one for the North West (of England), and I would like to see Midlands, NE, Scotland (different areas proberbly), Wales, SE, SW etc. Anyway Here goes, the North West Christmas get together will be held on Saturday 2nd December at Preston. We shall meet at around 3 - 4 pm at a vfenue TBC and then at around 7pm locate ourselves in a curry house of splendid fare. We should be finished by 9 -10pm, and this will allow people to get home by train. Preston can be reached directly from Liverpool, Manchester, Lancaster, Burnley (e.Lancs) and even Leeds, and return fares to these are all below £10. Please post here if you are interested in either attending or organising your regional bash. I eagely await your replies and suggestions.
Geoff Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 How about meeting at Greyfriars. It's central to all the interesting drinking holes in Preston. Plus it's fairly near the bus station and the railway station (10mins from each).
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 Possibly, its a bit of a chav hole-though. Somwhere with decent beer would be a good start. The Black Bull perhaps?
krisd32 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 black bull garstang rd? or the one in the town centre?
russdev Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 ok as did one recently I will go with that so i can sort out the midlands one... same idea meetup in afternoon and then move towards some other eating place... Russ
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 Town centre, opposite Greyfriars. 2 mins from the station. An ideal spot.
ConTheITGuy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Sounds good - count me in (provisionally) Andy
Geoff Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Er, Greyfriars is a Weatherspoons. Can get better beer than that.
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 Er, Greyfriars is a Weatherspoons. Can get better beer than that. Oh dear. You drink chemical sludge don't you?
Ric_ Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Hmmm.... beer and food.... better count me in Surely a trip to Wellies for much drinking and merriment!
krisd32 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 @ Dos_Box : what do you class as chemical sludge?
Ric_ Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 @ Dos_Box : what do you class as chemical sludge? He's one of these uncouth types that doesn't drink larger!
krisd32 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 got semsory glands of 80 year old! i really don't knw how people can enjoy that stuff!!!
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 @ Dos_Box : what do you class as chemical sludge? Anything that they don't tell you what its made of. Did you know beer is one of the few things exempt from showing its ingrediants on the label? Trust me, UK mass produced beer is almost as bad as Sunny Delight, and only a couple of chemicals removed.
Geoff Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Oh dear. You drink chemical sludge don't you? Guinness actually.
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 Anyway, back on topic. I think its a good idea to get as many of us as possible nationally together at the same time. Any more takers?
_Bat_ Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I'd go to the Midlands one. It'd be nice to meet those of you that go to that one... its a shame we can't all meet up together, but I know its not feasible.
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 Oh dear. You drink chemical sludge don't you? Guinness actually. Just sludge then
GrumbleDook Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Another one for the midlands here ... but if a London one is being arranged I might go to that so that Russ and I don't do a double act all night (though I did it with Stephen last time ...)
Geoff Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Guinness actually. Just sludge then Guinness stout is made from water, barley malt, hops, and brewers yeast. A portion of the barley is flaked (i.e. steamed and rolled) and roasted to give Guinness its dark-ruby colour and characteristic taste. It is pasteurised and filtered. Guinness only contains 198 calories (838 kilojoules) per imperial pint (20oz UK) (1460 kJ/L), less than an equal-sized serving of skimmed milk or orange juice and most other non-light beers. The water used comes from Lady's Well in the Wicklow Mountains. Draught Guinness and its canned counterpart contain nitrogen (N2) as well as carbon dioxide.
Dos_Box Posted October 9, 2006 Author Posted October 9, 2006 I've seen Guiness the morning after. Nuff' said.
wesleyw Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I'm with Geoff here lager doesn't really have enough of a flavour to bother drinking it and I ashamedly admit to drinking lager when I was younger, Real Ales are the way to go now though! Would be a midlands one for me too! Where? and When? Hopefully the girlfriend won't go into labour while I'm away drinking lol! Wes
beeswax Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 ah, the delights of brew 11. I'd like to put my name down for the edugeek north do. I may have a problem staying for the meal as I live in the sticks and my last guaranteed train back is 21:21, otherwise I'll have to kip on victoria station, and I'm not as young as I used to be (don't laugh, but since I started typing this I've had to go to the toilet 3 times. ok, on the first 2 occasions I'd forgotten why I was there)
