Student uploading of files from client to server

Trying to pre-empt an exam problem for later in the year!

 

Our students are required to supply a copy of databases/ss/word doc produced - students regularly forget their login details especially around exam time - so I've set up a generic login as a backup.

 

However, under this generic login they can't save to their home folders - don't want the teacher to go around with USB pens - have had problems here (for another post!) - have had a few ideas but not sure if any make sense:

 

1. a form/script running on the school website to upload files to a server?

2. a form/script running on the school website to upload files to the web server? -- really not sure about storage available for this one thought!

3. a form which would email the file directly to the teacher email account?

4. save into a shared folder - concern here about two files of the same name overwriting each other - plus permission here might be too open to allow students copy other students work.

 

From a google search I'm finding javascript and perl code examples - so basically I wondering if anyone could offer any advice or any alternatives?

You would want to be careful uploading exam work on a public facing webserver anyone get get hold of them.

 

Do you have a VLE why not upload to that?

 

Maybe change the permissions in the home area of the generic account so people using the account can save things and then teachers have the ability to go into that area.

In 1 of the schools that I worked in before, I used to set up exam users.They all had My Doc's folders for the users. I just gave the teacher that was in the room for the exam a list of usernames and passwords and they just logged who was using which username fr the exam.

 

I wouldn't upload work to a webserver with it being exam work.

Am I misunderstanding this, or are you trying to set up some scripting or an FTP site so that students don't have to remember their own password? Seems like a huge amount of work to address a non-problem...

Infact it would be easier to setup a facility for staff to reset student passwords. Its only takes a few mins to delegate contorol and setup an MMC.

When I was at Uni you weren't allowed access to your own logon during an exam anyway assuming that you may cheat off your saved work. We were each allocated an exam logon and password at the start of each exam which was unique and got rid of the issue of people forgetting.

 

The saved work files were then just grabbed out of the individual docs folders by a script afterwards and put into a marking folder that the teacher had access to.

 

This kind of system would probably save a few hedaches and could be automated along with providing extra non-cheating measures during exams.

I'd say the best option would be to allow teachers to reset passwords if the kids forget their passwords often.

Yeah, I was thinking that - currently experimenting with Moodle but need to figure out how to increase size of uploaded files (some database files students use can be quite large).

 

Will also look at delegation of permission to other teachers.
