syncinc audio and video - any experts here?

The old man recorded a band at new years, semi-professionaly with 24 inputs, mixing desk, etc into cubase etc.. Hes in the process of mixing it down now etc..

 

Anyway, the band also have a semi-professional video of the event. Pretty decent HD footage and it looks good. Problem is the audio for the camera is poor so their wanting to dub it from the audio.

 

Whats the best software to use for this? Im thinking Adobe Premier, but Ive never used it. Is it simple enough to do this? Dont want it looking like some Top Of The Pops mime show.

I normally either use VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists or Doom9 as per below articles

I've done something for a school production in the past using elements which wasn't too difficult. I should imagine you could do the same thing in Windows Movie Maker.

As they're of the same thing as long as he hasn't changed any timings of the band then it should sync up just by getting a reference point then matching the time codes.

 

Premiere should be fine for it, just unlink the original audio and import your new stuff.

 

I'd only worry about going to virtualdub and doom9 if you find any issues

No timings have been changed. So for example just link up the smash of a symbol audially and visually? Like what the clapboard is for when they make movies?

Theoretically, yes. I know I've tried it in the past and found the sound gradually drifts a few milliseconds off, which becomes noticeable after a short piece of footage. Obviously there was something more complicated involved that I have no clue about (sample rate? Tape stretching on Mini-DV camera?). Try it and see what happens.

Better than doing it visually would be to do it using the audio on both recordings. Even though the sound on the video is naff, you will be able to see the peaks of the music well enough to line them up with the peaks on the pro one.

 

Premiere Elements would definitely be better for this, though, as you can see individual frames much more easily.

Trouble is, to do this sort of thing properly, it will require a bit of learning whatever software you go for!

Ive got premier pro is that any different from premier elements?

 

Ill get some of the files sent to me and Ill have a play.

 

Good idea for using the 2 audio tracks and matching them up.

OK, Ive got all the files required, Ive been told which goes where, and IVe got adobe preimere pro CS4.

 

How the heck do you use pemier. Looks well complicated.

 

Anyone here use it lot that could either give me a couple of quick steps to get started, or point me to a newbie tutorial please? Got a bit of time before the kids and staff come back so can spend a bit of time on it..
