Ignatius Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 I got a contract BlackBerry 9700 about 4 weeks ago which has unlimited internet access but no data package. I know that it can be used as a 3G modem but, without a data package, it can be very expensive. Does anyone have experience (or is it even possible) of using a laptop via it (and the unlimited internet access) to surf the 'net? I know that I could get a data package or a PAYG 3G USB but I'm a Yorkshireman and want to do it as cheaply as possible!
Ric_ Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Unlimited Intenernet but no data? Is this what you really mean? You'll probably find that your 'unlimited' Internet allowance is actually capped (Vodafone is 500MB, O2 is 200MB, etc.). You can of course tether your phone to a computer and use some of this allowance - how can your provider tell the difference between a web page download on your phone and one on your computer?

Doesn't the Blackberry browser use a dedicated BlackBerry proxy? In which case, the tethered PC will be using a different route through.. which is how they can tell. At least that's what I was told?
RabbieBurns Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Is the way they tell how you are accessing the internet with your phone not done with the APN? I knew nothing of this TLA till I read this article: Vodafone gives away internet over Christmas ? The Register
cookie_monster Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Is the way they tell how you are accessing the internet with your phone not done with the APN? I knew nothing of this TLA till I read this article: Vodafone gives away internet over Christmas ? The Register The Rabbie is correct they do know by the way the device logs in, i've rang Voda before and they've told me how much data i've used from my laptop. The Sony software logs on using a diferent method can't remember the details off the top of my head. Ring your provider to ask about the costs. I get 500Mb per month on Voda, i've only used it a few times via my Sony mobile but it works well and using Firefox with no script the amount of data used was surprisingly low. It comes in handy when camping or on hols. Make sure you use an app that tracks your data usage (Sony Erricson PC Suite does this i'm sure Blackberry can) as when you go over it's v expensive approx £2 per Mb. This of course means that every month vodafone give me £1000 worth of free internet for only £20 line rental, that's what I call a bargain
