Small Home Firewall - Maybe Smoothwall?

Hi,

 

I am looking for a small Hardware firewall to be used at home. I will be looking at buying 2.

 

It needs to be about the same size of an ADSL router & fanless.

 

I would like it to have all the basuc firewall stuff and i would like basic content filtering as well, but will look into ones without.

 

I used to have smoothwall express running on an computer. I dont want a computer running 24 x 7 though.

 

I have looked at the sonicwall TZ Series, i have used these before.

 

Do Smoothwall make such an item? What else is out there?

Smoothwall do make UTM devices but I have no idea what they cost.

there is a mod on the smoothwall express forums where it allows you to run SWE 3 from a flash memory card if that helps with the fanless bit?

I wasnt aware they did one. All i can find is a firewalled ADSL router.

The discussion is for people to discuss other options like this so keep 'em coming.

LinITX.co.uk is your friend for this kind of job... try LinITX.com - ALIX Firewalls for some relatively cheap options with multiple NICs.

 

If none of those take your fancy, look in some of the other categories and you will find allsorts capable of running M0n0wall, IPCop or Smoothwall Express.

Jetway do itx boards with dual nics, and ones with a single nic but with a pci port. They tend to be a bit more expensive mind

I have had SWE running on an old P3 700mhz/384mb ram/10gb hdd and it fan fine.

fng> I've ordered from linitx before (built a few miniitx boxes) and they were always good for turn around. Never had any need to try out returning stuff though so YMMV

@FN-GM: I've used LinITX a couple of times... it was an EduGeek member that put me on to them.

 

Did you also see some of the options at LinITX.com - Firewalls for adding additional storage (e.g. Smoothie web cache) or purely so you can have 8 NICs!

With the mod how hard will it be to get smoothie on this do you think?

Also i am likely to run into any problems if the logs are doing allot of read & write?

@FN-GM: Don't know what mod you are talking about but if you just stick a small hard disk in there reads/writes should not be a problem plus you should give yourself a nice webcache.

 

@Midget: The drawback with hacking a Linksys router is that you have a much lower powered CPU and you don't have the ability to add a hard disk for web caching.

Smoothie usually OK on Compact Flash. We have it sunning on some nice little fanless geodes in the office - remind me in January and I'll fish out a link.

 

Worth pointing out we had to stick grub on instead of lilo to make it boot - so not *easy* but not that tough New smoothies (Express4 and new commercial stuff) will be grub as standard.
