Question for Spiceworks users

I've installed Spiceworks on a server.

Question 1: should I set it to run as a service?

Question 2: can I/how do I then access Spiceworks from my workstation?

Question 3: Do I have to have the browser open on the server in order to access from elsewhere on the network?

 

I know it's near to Christmas but I would like to get this working before the new term starts (and the Bursar starts asking for an inventory)

I don't think you can run it as a service, but if you can, let me know! I've always had to manually kick it back into place after a reboot.

(It's under preferences)

 

To access it go to http://ip:port/dashboard to access the administration area and http://ip:port/portal if you've enabled the user portal for your end users.

 

You do not need to have it open in a browser on the server. It sits in the background running.

 

If you're not using port 80 already then run Spiceworks on this port and then create a record in DNS so you can just have http://spiceworks for example.

Sounds good, thanks. Will look to doing that tomorrow. Not sure about the portal thing though, I don't think I've set that one up. Does it matter? Also just remembered that it's running on the default port which I think is 9765 or something. Will change that and put in a DNS record. Sorry one more question - what would the DNS record look like? Not really, the portal is your users backend it allows the submission of tickets and some knowledge type articles. Not many people use it because it's very basic at the moment.

 

I beleive the biggest use of Spiceworks is being an email based helpdesk.

Standard portage being 9675 so http://your.server.address:9675 which should bring up a login screen for you.

 

I would say run it as a server for sure, that way, it runs even when you're not logged in .. etc etc ..

The installation appears to be completely "scrambled" I click Launch in the SysTray icon and the splashscreen appears. Displays Starting ..... the progress bar fills with orange - then nothing. If I click on the splash screen it vanishes.

In Task Manager only spicetray and the splashscreen are running.

Spiceworks is showing as a process, but if I attempt to start it I get an error message.

 

Currently uninstalling and retarting the server. In the meantime if anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I would be very grateful.

Once you click start just leave it and let it load don't touch for 5 mins if nothing happens.

Okay, you need to start it by clicking 'Launch' when you right click the icon in the tray. Then the screen will come up as you have described and it'll start. Then just go to your browser as described above.

 

In the DNS I just created an A record I believe for helpdesk to point to server IP as I am running it on port 80.

Re-installed and ran it to collect what few devices were switched on That went OK. Then got side-tracked (see my Happy Christmas 2 post) so not sure what state it's in now.

just switched today from Sharepoint based to Spiceworks. Installed it on a VM and it runs as a service.
