Help : Failed Buffalo NAS

I am not sure this is the right place to post this but here goes. I have a Buffalo NAS with nealry all my IT files on. THe PSU is dead, i have hooked the HDD to my windows PC and th edrive is fine. I need to access the file son it so i can get them off. I don't have a Linux machine so i need some form of windows linux reader software. I have tried Diskinternals Linux reader and it shows th edrive but i can't see any files on it.

 

Can anyone help please?

Get a copy of ubuntu and boot off the CD as read it that way. You will need something else to save the data to.

Or how about a Knoppix live cd. That should let you mount the drive, and also have access to utilities and common network drivers.

as an aside. Our buffalo NAS also died. I can heartily recommend openfiler as a replacement if you have a spare machine packed with drives.

It might also be worth having a look at freenas [FreeNAS] if you want to build your own box.

Be wary of freenas raid 5 if you decide to go down that route (not that I recommend raid 5 in these cheap drive times). A quick trip around the forums reveals many issues with freenas raid 5 (a breakaway from its parents openfiler raid 5)

Software-based RAID5 is indeed rather horrible. Stick with RAID1 for safety or RAID0 for performance.

software raid 5 does have its uses. The fact that it doesnt rely on a controller chip therefore can be swapped between OS following hardware failure does have its uses but im arguing a moot point as I agree with you wholeheartidly. Raid 5 sucks. Use Raid 1 (or 10/01).

 

A cheap AMD board typically has 6 SATA ports on them nowadays so they can make mighty cheap backup boxes. Put that to the fact that modern SATA will hotswap (with a cheap hotswap 3 in 2 drive bay to you only need a 4x 5.25 slot case to fit 6 drives in).
