We're going to be getting a NAS to run as a secondary backup in another building on site. Should protect against fire etc.

Anyone got any recommendations for something that will be reliable that can just be locked away in a cupboard? Ideally it would support RAID5 of three disks plus a hot spare, and have a nicely intuitive web interface. Also, what are the chances of one that switches itself on and off for a backup job, and also accepts a WOL request when data retrieval was required?

Thanks all.

I'm looking for similar so thought maybe all the advice could be in one thread rather than 2. I am looking for a device to act as shared storage nfs or iscsi for a xenserver fail over setup.

Muts be robust and well supported not a buffalo :)

I was looking at qnap as possibles?

qnap seem to be having a lot of good press. They're certainly on my list of possibilities.

Hey, I like the Buffalo's, got two and used them in the past. Good bits of kit!

Ben - the Netgear ReadyNAS 3200 looks very interesting - considering it myself for part of a SAN/NAS setup next summer.

But that said I'm tempted to build my own based on a HP DL185 Rackmount. Possibly FreeNAS, or mayber Windows 2k8R2 with SMB shares (SMB2).

Tera stations are great when they work but a nightmare when they go wrong. If you go for one remember to budget for a replacement in about 2 to 2.5 years.

I can recommend the drobopro however it might be a little bit of overkill for what you want to use it for. However it is certainly worth investigating. Approx £850 for the chassis then however many disks you want to put in it and whatever capacity.

The number of times lately I have mentioned drobo products I should be on commission 8-).

I've been using a Netgear ReadyNAS 2100 for roughly this purpose. No complaints so far, but only been in service since August. I'm using it as the remote (as in on the other side of the site) backing store for a DPM server that sits in the server room and uses the NAS as an iSCSI target.

Normally I go for something a bit more robust (and expensive), but... you know... it's the backup system. As long as it doesn't fall over right after a data loss incident on the production servers, I'm not as concerned about reliability as I am my other NAS boxes. Hell, 6 months ago the school was using DAT tapes, and they aren't exactly famous for reliability.
