CRT Monitor Disposal (i want to give to charity but who ?)

Hi we have recently bought a load of TFT screens for our computers, this has left us with about 40 CRT 15 inch screens. the question is what to do with them.

 

Our LEA charge £6 a monitor to dispose of them and i have found a company that will give them to charity @ £5 a monitor, but there musty be others ways of disposing of them (giving them away).

 

Does any one know of anyone who would want them, or any bright ideas of what to do with them (no they don't maake good garden ornaments).

 

Any advice or pointers would much apprciated.

On a similar note I have 70+ base units ranging 486 --> P2/Celeron 500MHz and 15" monitors to go with them and I have no idea what to do with them. Any ideas that don't cost £12/machine for disposal? Most charities say they are too old for them and I don't know 70odd ComSc students in need of a DIY router.

I have a local supplier who will happily take them off me but it's no good for you southerners!

 

In the past I have given machines and monitors away to feeder schools... in particular one that we were involved in a project with. Find out if you have any technology links with feeder schools and ask their techie types.

not the 486 but the others would make great thin clients or could happily be used for internet/email/word processing using puppy linux of DSL.

maybe get the students to build em in an afterschool club.

I like this suggestion, i've been wanting to put out some linux clients with just net/wordprocessing on them, just a shame they are so bloody large.

 

If I had the space and time i'd take them myself and flog them on ebay, I was tempted to stick them up as a job lot. "3 pallets of computers and accompanying monitors £50 you collect"

 

Although thinking about it, the people on site can hardly use windows, throwing them into linux as well would kill them, it's hard enough getting them to accept that the new web based registration system is seperate from the windows logon (yes, I was caught out by this and spent ages trying to figure out why they couldn't logon)

You might find that with the staff but the kids will have no problems navigating a linux desktop. Maybe deploying to non-critical areas such as library, SEN rather than teaching IT suites could be the answer. We have about 120 PII 350s that network boot thinstation (linux) to connect direct to a windows (citrix) desktop. It pushes our computer:kid ratio up quite a bit The machines are about 6 yrs old but hardly give any problems.

/me rubs chin.......although i don't think we have anywhere to put them we already have 12 proper IT rooms (ie more than 20machines), and then loads of clusters all over the place.

 

I like the idea though, I'll give it a try (after my next project which is to get a linux server running QMail tied to the NT Domain and which is also connected via an ADSL connection to the real world (the county filtering is terrible, it even filters this site and regularily overloads if more than 20people try to use the net at the same time) so that the teachers can have an email address

The only free disposal place I have found is pcb-plus.

 

They're based in Derby, so we have to wait until they have a batch of local donors before they'll make the trip. The driver we've had on a couple of occasions seemed a bit miserable, but he took the stuff away Not a charitable donation, I appreciate - but a solution to our problem, nonetheless...
