RM CC4 GPO problems

Hi Everyone,

 

I was just browsing through the active directory today (as you do) and I found all of the built in Microsoft Administrative Templates have been removed from all GPO's.

Even if I create a GPO from scratch I still find they are missing.

 

Instead of Computer Config\Admin templates\System etc there is now just Research Machines.

 

Has anyone else came across this?

 

This may be a big issue for us as we often create custom GPO's

I didn't think CC4 used many of the features of AD now, thought they had customised things with a POSTGRES database?

Indeed but RM don't support going directly into AD (as much as it's a pain!) so this is why they've probably removed the said templates.

CC4 has its own Active Directory. The CC4 directory synchronises regularly with the Microsoft one. They explained this in detail at the CC4 training course.

 

I would ask RM first before making any changes in case you screw up the directory synchronisation.

Sorry I should of started off with me initial problem.

 

We have 20 wireless laptops that we are hoping to build on CC4 so far everything has gone on ok.

 

But when the students need leave the network for some reason e.g. another room or on a trip they need a method of storing their files until they get back to school.

 

The problems with USB drives and SD cards is that they can get lost easily so thats a non-starter.

 

We have also looked at RM's built in functionality called RM Synchronise or something similar, when requesting some more information about this RM admitted to me that there are still performance issues with this solution.

The solution works by users marking files they wish to edit offline, very similar to MS Offline files. However students can also mark their entire profile available offline.

 

When they get back on the network the offline files automatically synchronise to the network, now picture the previously stated performance problems on a wireless network with 20 laptops.

 

Long story short we are now looking into redirecting my documents to point locally rather than their N drive, it looks like the only way to pull this off on CC4 is to use the loopback policy that is now missing from AD

I'm being careful at the moment I've created a workstation type through the RMMC which is a clone of "Shared Laptop" and i'm editing that if theres a problem I can just delete it through RMMC.

I guess the only solution is to use removable media then, at least we can control their file size.

How are you creating it? If you make a new one in GPMC the new GPO should have the standard bunch of ADMs associated with it.

It's not the only solution, but all things considered it's a LOT easier than the GPO method. Get some of those bouncy pensticks with the rubber casing and attach them to easily findable lumps of dayglo plastic or something.
