Deploying Firefox

Hi all

Has anyone deployed Firefox in a managed OSX environment, I need to be able to set the proxy and the homepage for all users on each machine.

Funny this, I'm trying to do the exact same thing this morning! Can I ask why you are using firefox instead of safari?

 

Anyway, sadly unless you have apple remote desktop you would have to install firefox on each client machine.

 

Then read this and let me know how you get on.

 

I am going to try this exact same thing very shortly (this afternoon) and would be interested to share experiences!

We are having problems with Safari 4.0.4 logging on to SSL secured sites (our VLE) over the C2K proxy. The same machine will work with Firefox installed.

You should in theory be able to lock down Firefox in a similar fashion to the PC version, but as for deployment I don't know

In System Preferences > Network > Proxy - which options have you got selected? For HTTPS you need to set a https proxy server, AS WELL as a http proxy server.

This has been set up the problem is that Safari can't open the page on our VLE and gives a kCFErrorDomainCFNetworkError 303 as shown in the attachment.

Can you screenshot your system preferences > network > ethernet > advanced > proxies page please?

 

I've tested your VLE from one of my macs and it works fine. I could only test up to the user login box (green title).

Ive just noticed the day and time on the screen shot you sent me. It says Thursday....is this when you actually took the screen shot, or do you just have the date/time set wrong?

If i remember correctly you need to alter some resource files within the application. You need to do the following.

 

Go to the firefox application folder and right click and select show package content. Then within there select Contents > MacOS > grprefs. Then with a text editor edit the all.js files.

 

Within that file you will find a string relating to setting the proxy.

 

When this is done just put the firefox application you altered onto your image or roll it out with remote desktop.

WRT to the screenshot date and time refer to when it was taken. The error occurs after the login page mentioned when processing the submitted details.

 

I have attached the screenshot of proxies, both http and https proxies are set to the same address and port.

 

I have tried the link mention but ran into problems with a non admin user not being able to read the config file referenced. (I am thinking that this may be a permissions error within the firefox package as the config file is only readable by admin)

hmm, i'm also having some problems doing what the link I posted said. it doesnt seem to be doing what i wanted.

Maybe some progress at my end.

 

If I set the preferences in the all.js file instead of an external cfg file they seem to apply without problems on my test machine. I will try this on another system in the morning and see if it can be rolled out by copying the app bundle using ARD.

I've tried editing that file and it does work, however when I log off and back on as a different user, firefox doesnt get the settings that I want.e.g proxy server etc.

 

You having any more luck?
