Which Smart Phone??????

Nokia N900 quick hands-on -- Engadget

 

Doesn't look to bad but on this vid the touch response doesn't look that great

 

Oh don't believe those bunch of halfwits (engadget and gizmodo for that matter are truly awful websites). You can find much better reviews of the N900 out on the interwebs.

 

As for software its Linux in your pocket... how cool! The web browser is Mozilla based and the best browsing experience in any mobile, the email client could be better but it's only a matter of time until some one ports a better client to it and on the subject of 3rd party software that to is coming along nicely but still in its infancy (the N900 only came out a couple of weeks ago!).

 

The N900 has its "issues" but then so does every smart phone.

It looks big but in reality it's slightly smaller than a n97 standard.

I do a lot of hill walking so a GPS system, probably using google earth would be handy

 

 

The only really useful GPS compatible mapping system for off-tarmac use is Memory Map and the mobile version only works on WinMo devices which is a PITA.

 

It means that I have to carry my Hero and my old TyTynII when I'm out MTB'ing - the TyTyn runs my MM nav.

 

If you have a primary need for good off-road mapping then it has to be WinMo + Memory Map IMHO.

I still carry map and compass but increasingly I find that the MM / GPS is simply more convenient, especially on a windswept hillside when keeping hold of a paper map is a little troublesome

A map case is your friend here Until the bit you want is on the fold!! Always happens to me!

Exactly what my comment would have been This is why my GPS has taken over such duties.

 

I still carry the map though, I refuse to rely on anything electrical!
