With all the info on 2008, I haven't been able to find the answers to a few questions I have. I hope you guys can give some quick answers, or advice.

We have 1 DNS, 1 Exchange, 1 Fileserver, 1 Webserver, 1 ISA server. All server 2003.

What I would like to accomplish by moving to 2008: Password policies by OUs (not just Domain wide). Multiple storageboxes in exchange. Ability to work with both XP and Windows 7 (with login scripts, group policy, remoting)

What I think I need (and this is where I'm unsure)

1 x Server 2008 r2 Enterprise for the DNS

1 x Server 2008 r2 for Fileserver

1 x Server 2008 r2 for Web Server

1 x Server 2008 Enterprise Exchange - for exchange server

Isa server can stay 2003 for all I care =)

Does this sound correct?

This sounds OK to me.. however you do not need an w2k8 r2 enterprise license.. the standard edition will work just fine.. it will save you some cash :)

You are correct however i would just change fileserver to be storage server 2008.

If you are a school and Volume licensing i would simply suggest installing 2008 R2 Enterprise.

One thing to consider moving to windows xp and 7 mixed mode would be printer driver installation as if you push printers out using group policy it might be worth keeping a 2003 box so you can have old printer drivers for legacy xp machines.

Might need some serious hardware upgrades for the exchange box. if you are moving to exchange 2007 or 2010.

Does that answer your question as im not 100% sure what you are asking.

My primary question would be if I need enterprise to achieve some of the things I need. For instance, can I get enterprise just for the Exchange server and not for the Domain controller, or should the three primary servers all be on Enterprise? i.e. is there an issue of mixing them up? At the moment it doesn't sound line there is an issue.

Thanks for advice and the printer 2003 server suggestion.

No Standard Will be fine.

I only mentioned the printer as we moved to 90% windows 7 and hit major problems with drivers with xp. So have ended up running another vm of 2003 R2 to do printer drivers for Xp workstations.
