Hello all,

I recently purchased a Kingston 200 128GB USB memory stick which comes formatted in FAT32. I plugged it into my satellite receiver which is USB PVR compatible, formatted it using the built in software and 127GB of space is available. The receiver records OK but when playing back just freezes until I remove the memory stick.

If I insert the memory stick into my PC and play back using KMPlayer it plays absolutely fine. I then tried formatting in exFAT, but the receiver interestingly recognises it as NTFS and requires to be formatted back to FAT32.

I presume I'm right in thinking maybe the receiver needs a firmware update (although I am running the latest) to use a 128GB memory stick?

I agree that's the logical place to look, but believe me I have tried. Even the likes of Partition Magic doesn't let you partition memory sticks.

Boot an Ubuntu live cd and use gparted to partition it.

If you get a utility like hd tach and test the throughput of the memory stick to see if it has enough speed to do live recordings as I know they do the dual channel memory sticks that are pretty fast so am guessing if you try an external hard drive in comparison to the memory stick do you have similar issues ?

Just to see if its to do with the capacity of the ext device or if its the speed / throughput ?

Just to clarify I don't require the USB stick to be bootable, but just partition it. Ranish doesn't see memory sticks, only hard drives.

A Multiple Partition USB Stick with Multi Boot OS

TeraByte Unlimited :: Boot Manager :: Partition Manager :: Drive Image :: Disk Copy :: Drive Wipe :: Hard Drive Utilities

Thats what I found but just looking at the util you posted which is free

that free util you found looks good - the 2 above were just in case you were interested but not sure it will resolve what you were attempting

The software can partition and format memory sticks successfully of any size and it's fast too. Unfortunately reducing the size to below 32GB didn't make any difference with my digital receiver, however interestingly I tried an external 100GB 2.5" 5400rpm hard drive which worked perfectly both recording and playing back.

I still think it's a problem with the receiver as it plays back fine on my PC from a USB memory stick. Hopefully the problem will be fixed in a future firmware update. Still a great box bearing in mind the features and price :)

what memory stick is it exactly ?

Also if you get hdtach - what performance scores do you get in comparison with the ext hdd ?

I've tried a Kingston 200 128GB, Kingston 150 64GB and an OCZ 16GB. I've not tried any benchmark applications simply because recording is OK on all USB memory sticks, but playing back freezes my digital receiver after 10-15 seconds.

Plugging the same USB memory sticks into my PC and playing using KMPlayer (as the manufacturer recommends) works absolutely fine, so clearly it's just a small glitch with my digital receiver.

As above I then tried an external 100GB 2.5" 5400rpm hard drive which records and plays back fine on the digital receiver and PC, so either the hard drive is faster (which in theory it should be) or the digital receiver requires an update.
