Loading setting.... just for a change

Got to 10am this mornign and all of a sudden the network died. I was trying to instal a software package on a PC and it took half an hour and was slow as hell. I thought it was just the PC but when I got back to my office half the machines wouldn't get past the loading settings screen but half could.

 

Pinging the server shows a timeout every 30 or so replies so I think it might be that.

 

Problem is all the start menus are redirected to this server too so I am in a little bit of a pickle.

 

Better stop typing and sort it out.

Have you restarted the server?

Rebooted server Check

Changed network card check

Changed network cable check

Plugged straight into switch check

 

Ping returns to normal. I had this before so I think I need to buy a nice new network card for my server.

 

Also I was getting intermittent ping timeouts on another machine. Moved the cable to a different switch and it worked 10/10.

 

These switches that I inherited are rubbish. When I arrived there were 4 dead ones in my office, and that was just in the first 4 months. They're Level one something or other, I've got a couple fo netgear ones in now but I think I need to bite the bullet and purchase 2 more.

 

Problem is theres another 8 around school.

 

Think I will blame it on my lack of air con.

It will be somethign to do with the start menus mine does similiar and I have been told it may be the special shortcuts that office creates. If the users are logged on everything freezes it is not pleasant.

We had it here too last term. Changed the server that houses the admin install point for Office in the summer and haven't had a re-occurance yet.... seems to be that if the admin install point becomes invisible to clients for any reason they start hanging like spotty teenagers outside your local Kwiky Mart

When mine was flaky I could ping the server but it definately wasn't responding properly when you sat at it (2 mins + to open explorer etc.) a reboot would usually make it go away for a while but not always... was looking for some trashy app with a memory leak but never quite pinned it down to any one thing...
