suggestions for low powered pc

got these compaq pcs which are being sent off in a shipment to africa. Put ubuntu on the P4(1.5ghz)/384mb ram and it works great but there's some celeron(1ghz) and it doesn't work good at all ~ graphics are all messed up

 

haven't really got time to mess around figuring out how to swap the desktop. unless its really easy?

are there any other distros that aren't quite so high powered graphically wise?

In the interim I've discovered xubuntu, which seems made for the task. gonna give that a go.

xubuntu is a good option. You could also try something like linpus lite (used for netbooks) or Damn Small Linux DSL information

Xubuntu is pretty good; I run it on my netbook.

 

If you've already got ubuntu installed on them you can "help" yourself a little by apt-get installing xubuntu-desktop on top, not as clean as a fresh install but depending upon timings etc it might work OK for you.

xubuntu-desktop isn't that lightweight really*. Maybe look at openbox?

 

 

*"compared to Gnome" doesn't count. Gnome = Hippo.

stuck with xubuntu in the end. appropriate because ubuntu the word is an African philosophical principle of "humanity towards others"

I know I'm late to the party but for next time consider CrunchBang Linx. It runs OpenBox window manager so is light on resource requirements and the last time I used it it was based on Ubuntu (although there was talk of switching to base it on Debian instead).
