sims.net installation on server 2008

Overview - trying to install sims.net on server 2008 R2 32 bit server - want to test using it as an application published on terminal services as we are looking to replace our aged citrix setup.

 

Could not install sims.net due to it not liking the mapped H drive which points to our sims server and where all sims an setups are. Although drive is mapped ok - will stay mapped after login/restart and you can start simsinst from there - when you try and change path for sims shared directories from c to H you cannot see it when you try to browse from the sims setup screen - even though it is there under Computer. Tried just changing letter to H - does not like it - cannot find sims directory on mapped drive.

 

Tried running "install application on a terminal server" - using this it installed sims.net ok and found h drive.

However when i launch sims it comes up with locate sims on your system message - looking for connect.ini on C:/sims - you can browse and find conect.ini on H but sims won't launch - relaunching sims prompts you for location of connect.ini file again - looked at sims file in c:\windows and it does say sims directory is H:/sims but it will not find it.

 

Obviously just a problem with mapped drives but i can't find an answer - anybody got any suggestions please ???

You can't install SIMS to a mapped drive, has to be a physical drive\path.

installing sims to c drive - it is the setups and shared sims stuff on mapped drive - mapped to admin server - this is the way it is installed on stations - never had a problem with it - it did install as terminal app but won't find connect ini on mapped drive

Disable UAC or login as Administrator (the specific user, not just any administrator).

Second that, disable UAC and run as administrator from network drive, works fine here as long as you are not using a 64bit install of 2008.

Just a thought, you mentioned that you were using 2008R2 32 bit. There isn't such a thing, it must be 2008 32 bit or 2008R2 64 bit. I think you are going to have problems if you are trying to use SIMS workstation on 64 bit.

We had no end of permissions problems on the shares when we moved to Win 2K8 32 bit.

 

When installing the server, put the actual file paths, not the mapped drives. You only need to use the mapped drives for the client install.

 

SIMS is not supported on R2 and there is no release schedule for this to be supported, they are currently just investigating it. Windows 7 should be supported in the client environment with the Spring 2010 release.

Thanks for help on this - disabled UAC and all ok.

It was server 2008 32 bit SP2 not R2.

sims.net working ok and works as a published application via web page.

now need more testing and certificates setting up - looks promising - defintitely going to be cheaper than spending £12.000 on citrix as there is no upgrade path from our current version,

Set your connect.ini on the server to point at the full UNC path to your connect.ini on the sims server. .
