Which ProCurve Switch

Hi All

 

We are looking to replace our ageing HP ProCurve 2524 switches as we are experiencing bottlenecks on our network.

 

We currently have a 1Gb fibre backbone and a number of 1Gb switches however the 2524 are the last ones to deliver 100Mbps to the desktop.

 

We don’t require PoE and so have been looking at HP ProCurve 1810G-24 to be the replacement, has anyone any experience of this switch or can anyone offer any advice as to a more suitable replacement.

 

Budget is tight, probably limited to £500 per unit.

Make sure you spec the 2510G-48 (I assume there's also a 24 port version), the normal 2510 only has gigabit on the uplinks.

 

I'd avoid the 1810, if it's like the old 1800. Although it's managed it doesn't have the standard ProCurve interface, it also can't be configured from ProCurve manager.

I've got a 2510G-48 from CP LTD as my core switch here and to be honest it's doing pretty darn well considering how cheap they are!!!.

 

If it does me as a core switch it should do you as an edge switch very nicely!

@Midnight: Your bottleneck is unlikely to be your desktop connections - think about it... 24 100Mbps ports connected by a single 1Gbps port?

 

I would suggest teaming a couple of ports to increase your backbone link to 2GBps to give you closer to 100Mbps per port. If you increase the speed to the desktop without doing this, you will just have desktops fighting for the full gig link.

The 2524 switches aren't that bad, even if they a little old now. I doubt that changing them will solve your problems unless they are faulty, as Ric says above, you'll still only have a GB uplink. Buy a new module for it, and double the uplink if you can.
