The people who write those documents manage 30gb databases for a living. We support a 2gb database, but it's not our only job. Splitting the mdf and ldf up may indeed increase performance, but the support aspect it drastically increased. So much so it's cheaper, easier to just get faster hard drives.

Yeh one single point of failure can also be a good thing ;) 2 drives = twice as likely for one of them to fail.

 

Anyway with the advent of SSD drives I have not had a drive fail in a long time.
