butterscotch Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 (edited) Hello, would be intersted to know the opinion of you regarding whether we should teach students what to watch out for re social engineering. is there a danger that we teach them the principles of social engineering they will go out and use the data they find maliciously.. a recent experiment conducted by me netted an amount of private information (in my experiment nothing really usable in the real world but i needed something that might have been), and if some of us, the trained experts? succumb to it, how do we teach our youngsters not too. thoughts guys..... butterscotch Edited November 9, 2009 by butterscotch incroeect words
srochford Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 It's definitely important to teach users how to stay safe on line - yes, they may go and misuse that info but that's true for all sorts of "bad" things. I think it's far better that users are aware of risks - OK; some might try and misuse the info but if everyone is aware of how to stay safe it makes life harder for the bad guys.
pete Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Definitely worth doing - we do it here (ish). IT Teachers briefly mention it during induction and the PFY and I have done a few sessions. One caveat - offer the training to staff _before_ you do the kids
