Windows Movie Maker 5.1 - Capturing video from webcam

We've got a problem with Windows Movie Maker 5.1 running on Windows XP.

 

When users use the Video Capture Wizard to record footage with a webcam, they cannot save the footage to anywhere apart from Shared Video on the local computer. This means that, when they come to work on the project again, they must use the same computer otherwise their video isn't there. The only workaround is to export the footage and re-import into Movie Maker.

 

Is there a reason why it won't capture the video to a network drive? Clicking on Browse select somewhere to save the video before capture results in a completely blank My Documents and My Computer where there is definitely something in there and users definitely have access.

 

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Open up Windows Movie Maker and navigate to Tools > Options

 

Change the 'Temporary Storage' path to H:\My Videos (for example). This should do the trick.

Unfortunately, that's not the right place.

I've changed that and it's still saving captured video to Shared Video which I assume is on the local machine. I need to save this captured footage to Shared Video in the user's userspace.

Even if you get the mapping working, you might want to reconsider capturing video in real time to a network device as any hiccups/delays on the network could ruin the whole capture

Did you get this sorted? Previous years we have used external hard drives and memory sticks. This year, the memory stick shows up on the PC. Can see it as drive E: but doesn't show up when you try to capture and want to use E: as the location. And on further investigation, previous years we have used external usb hard drives, this year we tried to use external usb memory sticks. XP can tell the difference and doesn't allow the memory stick to be used for capture. Anyone got a way to change this behaviour as were using quite fast memory sticks that are large enough and we don't intend to use them for DV capture quality so surely should be fast enough.
