Training - any recommendations?

I'm currently trying to build web sites for the 2 schools I work in based on The excellent Edugeek joomla package.

 

One site is nearly ready to go public but it's a far cry from many of the super sites some of you guys and gals have put together. The help from people on Edugeek has been invaluable - thank you to those many people who have given me advice.

 

However, frankly I have found it a huge struggle! Is there any training you folks would recommend toward getting a better grasp of the general concepts of web sites - particularly Joomla?

 

 

My HT has said the school will pay for any training I need!!

I think the best way is to set up your own Joomla package on a separate server and have a play, its what I did, play with themes and get something looking good. Best places to learn it all? Probably Google! and the Joomla forums, Ive always found self learning on those things means you pick up so much more of the underlying aspects of the program by trying to fix mistakes!! (Hence the separate server! Dont want to go experimenting with a live environment!)

I have to agree, yeah it is a bit of a nightmare at first because everything seems to be in the most random of places. You have to have a play though, it's the only real way to learn. Stick it in another folder, install and off you go. Simply turn it off when you have finished playing and its not visible!

The web really does have the answers to any questions, you begin to get used to certain features and can start moving forward (love google).

If you see anything though, don't hesitate to pop it on this thread, may be helpful for people another time.

yeah I agree, best way to learn is to have a play around with a test setup. I've got a few test setups running that I have let people play around with. Could always play around with 1 that I have set up if you want. Drop me an PM if you want. That goes for anyone.

My boss has told me some books are avalible, but i dont know much else. A quick search returned News - The Joomla Book - A Users Guide to Joomla 1.5. Hope this helps.
