Is it possible to roll back to XP

My PC is second hand and has come with Windows Vista upgraded from XP.

Is there any way that I can get the system back to running XP?

The only disks I have with it are applications and drivers so I don't think that I even have an XP disk so with that in mind, what would be the easiest and cheapest method to get my system running XP again?

How much does W7 eat into the RAM though? The problem I have with this PC is that it originally ran on XP but the previous owner upgraded it to Vista and now it's REALLY slow!

 

I've not heard much yet about W7, either good or bad.

this is true, alterbative os'es are fun to play with! while ur on the *nix's why not create a hackbook slow! (osx86)

I've had some advice to upgrade the RAM so I went to PC world and bought 2GB but I think they sold me the wrong cards as they don't fit.

They told me that I needed DDR cards but the manual says I need DDR2 ones.

They'd better swap them for me tomorrow, I've had quite bad experiences with PC in the past!!

 

The old card (256mb ones) lookd pretty similar but the central notch is in a very slightly different place on the DDR cards meaning they don't fit..... I stopped short of calling in the hammer and crow bar!

 

The system specs are:

 

Pentium 4 Processor 520 with HT technology (2.80GHz, 800fsb, 1MB Cache)

40GB Serial ATA Hard Drive

512MB Dual Channel 400MHz Memory

download a program called cpu-z (free download of the net) run this and it will tell you exactly what RAM is installed in your PC, this will give you an idea of what you need to buy.

With 2GB of ram, you should be able to have a fairly decent experience with Windows 7. In this day and age, I don't really believe XP makes a good choice anymore, although some people can't people run it of course.

DDR400 can be both DDRI and DDRII, if the keys of the RAM are in the wrong place its highly likely that you just need to get the other type, I would think PC world would take the RAM back and replace it for the DDR2 as it was them that suggested it!
