Encouraging non-teaching staff to use VLE

Hi

 

I have been tasked to give training to our office and non teaching staff for our new Frog VLE.

 

I am just curious to see how other schools get their adminstrative and other non teaching staff (e.g. pastoral, Heads of years) to use their learning platform.

 

I can think of a few things that would be useful for these types of staff such as:

 

a portal site containing all relevant policy documents as well as a forms section for all staff to access to reduce paper based forms as well as creating discussion forums and maybe run the odd poll or two.

 

Does anyone have any other ideas they can give me? I need to do a two hour session on this and am worried I might not have enough to talk about. It be good to hear how others schools have implemented their platform so non teachers are also making good use of it.

Block the use of memory sticks. Works a treat.

put all their training resources on it so they use it for training themselves.

 

any time you get a cd, video, link put it on the the vle

 

link sims timetables into the vle

 

put all info about pupil attainment into the vle

 

put the school calendar into the vle

 

get the idea, they won;'t be able to avoid it.

We're a Frog school and were also in your situation. I found that a good way to populate and get people using the VLE was to add a feature, add a gimmick. Add a feature, add a gimmick...

 

For example, we have our briefing notes on the VLE, then we added a photo gallery of school events.

 

Then we added the cover list from SIMS, then added forums.

 

Most of the resources we have are now on their. As you have Frog you can also get the Secure Gateway module so that you can publish your software for staff/students to use at home. We've found that our staff love using this feature.

It's a good place for support staff to share their resources, likewise admin staff. (Saves clogging up the network drives) If you have instant messaging or chat, support staff can "talk" to each other from home. Might even wean them away from talking about school on Facebook:D

 

Two hours will soon fly past if you get them designing their home pages, sending each other messages, voting for the best biscuits - that's if it is to be a hands on session (most popular).

Often non teaching staff complain they do not know whats going on.

 

When dealing with policies/documents get a proper naming and version structure. It helps trying to find them and also identifies which one is current.

 

I do not know if its possible in frog to set alerts as in sharepoint to tell you when a document needs updating or reviewing. There are some documents that schools need to review every year
