NAS box for home

I've seen a few posts on here recommending NAS boxes for work but can anyone recommend one for home?

 

It will be connected to my switch and feed all the computers through a homeplug system.

 

Not sure how many drives but I guess 4 so I can RAID them. I have so much stuff on my current network box (which only has one drive) that I am worried about loosing it. Hopefully a RAID NAS box will get rid of this worry for me.

I would recommend the Netgear Readynas Duo boxes. You can pick one up for about £140 from dabs and they are also offering a free 500gb disk. Its got RAID1, it can be a sort of media centre. It consumes very low power about 1/10th of a PC. You can even tell it to shutdown at certain times and power on on a schedule.

 

Its very efficient you can use it to house all your music and photos and can share them through various devices. If you have usb printer you can also share it so it can be accessed on numerous machines.

 

You can also advertise your nas box over the internet so you can access your files outside of your home. Wouldn't recommend this though unless you setup the security properly. Its even got a bit torrent client where you can download torrents saving having to leave your PC on.

 

I have the Netgear RND2000 series and would recommend it highly.

If you look around, pickup an old pc or build with as many sata ports as you can get your hands on and FREENAS it / Or Openfiler if you are that way !! you will get a lot more functions then most NAS boxes for around same price.

 

Just takes a bit more time and tech knowledge than an off the shelf NAS. But thats the fun!!! Cheap n' easy isn't always the best

I'd recommend the readynas duo aswell (RND2000) with 2 1TB HDD mirrored does the job, shares my printer, streams media to PS3 and shares all my files on the network. As mentioned above you can set the power saving options which is a good feature along with the built in bit torrent client.

I looked a raid 5 solution but the price shoots up.
