Windows Live Movie Maker under Windows 7

As title, we're experimenting with the Windows Live version of Movie Maker because Microsoft saw fit to remove it from Windows 7 and we have a number of lesson plans that incorporate it.

 

Although Movie Maker itself seems to work fine, it stubbornly refuses to add content from a network location.

 

That's going to be a big problem for us, and many other schools I suspect - we don't just give students or staff access to the local disk or a writable desktop folder to dump stuff into - can anyone else confirm this failure to add from a network location is indeed normal behaviour for the new version of Movie Maker and not just me having a moment?

Windows live movie maker is really cut down as well, no more timeline or any good editing features last time I looked (which admittedly was about 6 months ago)

 

Found the one shipped with Vista was the best as it had DVD support unfortunately not avail as a download though

Try the MM2.6 version that was released for Vista users, it is supposed to work on Win 7 too.

There is a registry hack that allows the use of network files, but it is user based so you would need to find a way of doing this for each user. Your other choice (and the one we took) was to use the Vista movie maker.

 

All you need to do is find a Vista machine copy the folder, place it on a network drive and then create the shortcut

Good tip - I'll copy that off my machine before I Win7 it over half term. Presumably you could also wrap it into an MSI and install it locally?

you could wrap it in an msi file but to be honest we run it from our apps server and it works OK. Much easier than installing locally

Local installs would reduce bandwidth usage though, particularly useful where video editing it involved.

That is not a problem when you run a single mandatory roaming profile for your student users - I will just use regedit to mount the registry hive and make the adjustment there.

 

As for the staff, that will get added into the logon script.
