Kind of reassuring

I spent this morning at the secondary where I am governor, observing MFL lessons...

 

In my first lesson, the pen on the Promethean IWB wasn't working. Teacher was just saying they'd have to call IT, but I 'fixed' it.

 

Power switched off at wall.

 

Luckily it was a Year 7 class, suitably well behaved due a to stranger visiting, so she got away with it

Good show, thats what it's all about.

 

I was a governor at my previous school (albeit a Staff Governor) and I enjoyed observing teaching colleagues doing what they did best and I did have to admit, they taught a lot better than I could ... talk about the right vocations!

Yep, first observation I did (very informal) was an eye-opener. The hard part is getting the teacher not to ask you if you can fix a problem whilst you are there.

Ironically the first interview panel that I was asked to be part of was for their new NM... it wasn't until the panel were having their chat before the interviews, that the HT finally realised what my day-job was.

 

I observed ICT teaching there last term... the first time any of the teachers could remember a governor taking an interest in them. They were delighted and I got an opportunity to be nosey

How on earth do you get the time to observe? I have just about managed to be on two interview panels in my 8 years as a governor. I am going to be 'allowed out' for the new HT interviews soon, but I can't see them letting me out to observe even though I am supposed to be IT governor at one school and Careers governor at the other

How on earth do you get the time to observe?

 

My job's in a private school

1. The HT deems it to be in the school's charitable status interests to support the community and supports me working flexible hours to turn out for the school where I'm governor.

2. We broke up on Tuesday!

 

The governors are encouraged to go in to do observations on 3 days a year... I can manage 2 of them in my school's holidays. The summer one is always in our term-time.

 

As for interview panels, etc... if they conflict with my hours, I check with the school diary and the HT and, as long as it doesn't impact my school unecessarily, I can go.

 

All my time at the school where I'm governor is recorded at my school as evidence as is any other community stuff that staff do.
