Hebdenlad Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Xenserver is not currently on the roadmap getting a more detailed version soon - but we know it works :-)
Hebdenlad Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I know there are some commercial challenges at the moment but we are working to "fix" them as soon as we can.
Hebdenlad Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 De-duplication is there now so you can use it. be aware though of your block size... the reason for this is that as we do de-dupe at a block level the size of the block can have an affect on the CPU utilisation. For example, when we run de-dupe on a file system ZFS creates a "look up table" and when identical blocks get written this table is updated (i.e. the counter per block increased by one and so on). We do not write that block to the share so there is a slight reduction in the write workload. But, if you have a small block size, say 4k or 8k then the overhead can be quite high as there's lots of checksumming going on but you do get better de-dupe ratios. On the other side of the coin, if you have larger block sizes (say using the standard 128k block size in ZFS) then you'll have less CPU activity as there are fewer blocks to checksum but a slightly lower de-dupe ratio. It's a choice thing. I've just told Ric at Baines to turn on de-dupe on one of his shares and let me know what ratio / performance hit he gets. Cheers, Phil
DMcCoy Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 So it seems all SAN prices are up quite a lot on when I last looked. Is anyone able to supply me with the current price for the base 12TB 7310?
Duke Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 So it seems all SAN prices are up quite a lot on when I last looked. Is anyone able to supply me with the current price for the base 12TB 7310? Andy T at Cutter or Andy P at WTL should be able to sort you out, but based on what I've heard from Andy T it's probably not going to be good news. Oracle are 're-evaluating' all the educational and matching grant prices, and until then everything's full price. It's still cheaper than the equivalent NetApp or EMC box, but it makes it pretty difficult for schools to afford. Hardware refresh coming soonish, it might mean you can get away with a new 7110 or 7210.
DMcCoy Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Unfortunately the 7110 is not much improvement on my current MSA/CX arrangement. The 7210 comes in one option and it's $86000! 1

The hardware refresh may change that though, and mean the 7110 might do what you need. I don't have full details and it's still under NDA, but have a chat with Phil at Sun/Oracle and he should be able to give you a better idea of things. Must admit I didn't realise the 7210 was costing that much, ouch... Time for an open letter from EduGeek users to Larry Ellison? 1
pstrode Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Unfortunately the 7110 is not much improvement on my current MSA/CX arrangement. The 7210 comes in one option and it's $86000! The 7210 comes in two off the shelf configs and you are correct the one configuration is approximately $86,000 on todays exchange rate. That said please bare in mind that the $86,000 is list pricing. 1
linescanner Posted May 22, 2010 Posted May 22, 2010 We are getting discounts, but it takes a little while to come through. Drop me a PM if you are interested. 1

Duke Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 An excellent blog on partition alignment by Oracle's David Lutz. Must read if you want the best performance out of any iSCSI or FC LUN. Partition Alignment Guidelines for Unified Storage : Performance Profiles Spent a while trying to get my head around this when I was setting up our new SQL server (local storage only, wasn't on the S7000) until I found out Server 2008 handles it for you... Well written and clear, cheers. 1
dejijones Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Anyone deploy any of the 7000s in a NAS production environment in the last couple of months ?, just wanted know how its copping compared with other vendors like the NetaApp Filers and EMC celera's.

Hi there. The S7000 works incredibly well in NAS production environments. What are you trying to "run" on a NAS in your production environment? There's about 5000 units and over 120PB of disk on the S7000 right now and lots of customers use it every day with great success. Drop me a line on here and I can put you in touch with my counterpart in your neck of the woods. Regards, Phil 1

Had a 7210 running for about a year now as a NAS box, has all the file shares, redirected documents, profiles etc on. It has working extremely well, had a few niggles when we moved from 2003 server domain to 2008 R2 but in the end that was easily fixed. Performance is superb, we have over 600 computers connecting to it and 1500 users with no performance issues at all. 2

All good here (7410, looking to buy a 7120 to go with it) for NAS (CIFS and NFS). Definitely better than NetApp from a price/performance point of view. You could get a NetApp box that would outperform an S7000 box, but you'd be paying 10x for it. NetApp quoted us £120k to upgrade our storage, Sun/Oracle gave us a bigger/faster box for under £40k. Of course, if you've got tons on money to throw around then NetApp is still nice kit. The S7000 isn't perfect, we get the odd hiccup like you do with any hardware. It's extremely good at staying up and serving files even when it does have issues though. Currently got 10 VMs on it over NFS and about 500 users (userspaces + profiles) on it over CIFS. Eventually this will be about 1600 users and I don't foresee any major issues. Happy to chat if you want to PM me, otherwise Phil at Oracle will sort you out. Cheers, Chris 2
Hebdenlad Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Trevor, you have an S7310 matey :-) probably early morning fat fingers - see you later on this morning.
Hebdenlad Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I know the reply is a bit after your original posting but we now have the S7120 which has 12 - 120TB of storage (starts with 12x drives and 96GB write acceleration (100k IOPS) Drop me a line on here if you want / need to chat about this. Ha ha, yeah, as you saw this morning it just sits there working away and I forget about it, so I'd completely forgotten what model it was ;-)

We'll we've just gone from a Sun 7110 to an EMC Celerra NS-480, so I can offer some comparisions between the two systems if you like . Firstly I'd just like to say that we're 100% happy with the Sun 7110. It's an excellent unit, it had just reached 100% capacity! If the Oracle pricing had been keener (something I believe has been rectified) we would have jumped at the chance of a 7310/7410, but unfortunately EMC came along and undercut everyone by a significant margin . The Sun system is without a shadow of a doubt the easier system to work with. The Celerra is very very very complicated. I'm just very glad that EMC set it all up! The web interface for the Celerra is OK. It's not quite as good as the Sun system, but it's still pretty easy to move around. It's not really fair to directly compare performance between our two systems (the Celerra has 3tb of SSDs!), but I will say that we've been more than happy with the performance we got from the 7110. It's happily serving files for all staff and students (1100 users), as well as acting as an NFS store for alot of VMs (around 20). If I was offered a swapout of our Celerra for a like-for-like Sun model I'd almost certainly take it. The EMC Celerra is a nice bit of kit, but to be honest it's just too complicated! That and I'm not overly keen on EMCs snapshotting model 1
Butuz Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Can I just confirm Soulfish that you are in an 1100 user secondary school??? Cheers Butuz
apaton Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 NDMP Backups on Sun ZFS Storage Appliance (S7000) I wasn't a big fan of NDMP backup on the S7000 and had a few issues with early versions. But looks like things are back on track see link to NDMP white-paper from Oracle. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/systems-hardware-architecture/ndmp-whitepaper-192164.pdf
Soulfish Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Can I just confirm Soulfish that you are in an 1100 user secondary school??? Cheers Butuz Hi Butuz, I've only just seen your reply, so sorry for the very tardy response . I do indeed work in a roughly 1100 secondary school. But when EMC offers you the sorts of discounts we got its hard to say no - they were one of the cheapest options we had when we went out to tender as well as giving us the most kit. Winning combination really
