timbo343 Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I'm currently testing out Windows 7 on our domain and i have got round to installing SIMS on it. I'm having a problem when trying to install the client. Im getting: "SIMS installer was unable to write to the SIMS applications shared directory supplied as S:\SIMS. Do you wish to correct this?" As far as i know, the permissions are ok and when installing SIMS on an XP environment it works without any problems. I have had a look around here already and have found a thread about the SIMS directory having folders with strings of numbers as file names and deleting them but I dont have any of those in there. Can anyone help? Thanks Tim

matt40k Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Appears W7 support will be included in Autumn release (5th Nov), but it won't be supported as they haven't checked everything, like Nova-T Sounds like you need to turn off UAC. SIMS works on 64bit, the client bits might not be supported tho.

Jez Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Try Vitrual XP Mode this runs a copy of the XP kernel and supports all software so far that didn't work for me in Windows 7 but did in XP Hope that helps

I tried the early beta of 7 with it and UAC was a little iffy (This was before any SIMS support for W7 (to my knowledge anyway with it being a beta - I could be wrong!) ). I am not sure if I was connected to the domain or not at the time. I shall check my notes!
matt40k Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Remember someone saying something about UAC and network drives... you have to use a script to promote your access rights to the mapped drive, or use UNC??, I remember someone saying W2k8 -R2? has loads more GP about UAC and they were saying it's a pain in the rear... didn't make any notes so can't be sure.

One assumes the problems with FMS etc will have been sorted by then. I hope that the delay with Autumn Release is not because of this!
matt40k Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Nope, Autumn should run ok on Windows 7, but at the SIMS Update Seminar, they said they won't support it.... yet. It'll be like Windows 2008, when they supported it from 1st Jan, even though Dec came out in Jan.
jmcdermott Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Simply turn off the UAC (user account control) reset then try again. I think this is an issue is caused by the sims install running other setup files, you can give run as admin to the first setup but not the rest, turning uac off fixes it.
